Hornchurch had an early scare when Sam Mott tipped a Derek Duncan shot over the bar, and the corner was eventually scrambled away after the ball had hit the near post and almost into the net. On fifteen minutes Leon McKenzie played a good ball to Ross Wall, but he was crowded out before he could shoot. Five minutes later it McKenzie again sent a long ball to Ross Wall, who ran forward, and Niklas Freund made an excellent diving save to turn the goal-bound shot over the bar, which led to two successive corners before the ball was finally punted away to safety. After Elliot Styles picked up his eighth booking of the season, the free kick came to nothing, but two minutes later Jed Chouman was dispossessed, and Nathan Cooper had to rush back to clear the resulting shot off the line. Then came the miss of the match. Abs Seymour played the ball to Wall, and Freund made another fine save, but the ball bounced loose to Kenzer Lee, who, from just a few yards out, scooped his shot high over the bar. On 42 minutes a long ball gave Wall a shooting chance, but Freund saved with his feet. As half time approached, Abs Thompson, who was closely marked throughout the match, almost broke through, only for Ricardo Joseph to concede a corner, whilst at the other end a Duncan free kick was deflected for a corner at the other end. After a short period of dominance in the second half, Robbie Rees put in a good shot for VCD, which was deflected away for a corner, and on 56 minutes Ed O’Neill fired his shot wide of the post. Ross Wall had a shot blocked as Hornchurch again pushed forward, but VCD replied with a good run by Rees, with Bentley racing back to turn the shot away for a corner. On 73 minutes Mott made a good save from a Jack Stevenson free kick, and two minutes later Thompson opened up the VCD defence and his low cross just eluded Seymour, who could not apply the touch needed to put the ball into the net. Wall again went close with a snap shot, the ball flashing just wide of the post, and the hard-working McKenzie was replaced by Ayrton Coley, who caused a few problems in the VCD defence as Hornchurch began to press forward. VCD concentrated on defence, and they survived some heavy pressure in the final few minutes to go away with a point.
