Enfield Town v Wingate & Finchley

Another fiercely contested North London derby to look forward to at the QE2 Stadium tomorrow afternoon, when Town host near neighbours Wingate & Finchley in the Ryman Premier Division, look to consolidate their recent upturn in form.

Matches against Wingate are always exciting, highly competitive, close encounters. Tomorrow will be no exception, and Town will need to play well to win this one. Last season Town secured the League double over Wingate, winning 2-0 at home and 2-1 away. Tomorrow the two sides go into this match separated only by goal difference. Town are 14th in the table, with a eight goal advantage over Wingate.

A cracking match in prospect. Let's have plenty of loud noisy support and encouragement for Town, to make home advantage tell.

A very disappointing result for Town which ends our unbeaten home record and seven match unbeaten run. Due credit to Wingate, but was this result a fair reflection of the match, balance of play, chances, etc or did we simply not deliver a match-winning performance. Comments welcome.

So far as the Town were concerned it was probably one of the worst performances I

have seen by a side representing Enfield in many a year. Yes we only lost I-0 but it was haw we lost. The only player who can hold his head up is Kirby. What ever spin some may

put on it the team played as a bunch of strangers, they appeared to have no game plan

other than to hit long balls into a tall defence, very few passes met their target and so on...

 

I don't feel inclined to mention any player because if you were at the game you

will have your own views. Nor do I exclude the management or coaching

staff from my observations because they should by now, knowing the capability of

each player in the side, have come up with a new plan as to how best they should

play. It is now post-Corey and to play as if he is still there with long balls for him to chase and makes something out of nothing is no longer on.

 

I am afraid it's going to be a hard winter!!!

What the hell have I just witnessed.

That is the worst 90 mins of football I have seen from an Enfield Town side in ages. One chance in 90 mmins.

The team played as though they were total strangers, no game plan what so ever never mind plan B there wasn't even a plan A. The subs apart

from Bobby who at least did try added absolutely nothing. Something has got to change or as 4wembleyfinals said its going to be a very long hard winter.

Mark Kirby played with his heart on his sleeve and credit to him for that, but hard as he tried even he could not motivate his team mates.

Bit of a worry Mark played the second half obviously injured hope he can make Monday. Claudio snubbed out ever thing we had to offer but sadly

that was very very little.

Agree with above comments.

To say it was poor is giving too much credit.

It was dire, inept, disjointed with no "team play"

 

One shot in each half - their keeper had a day off.

 

I have asked this before, so I will ask again.

Why do we persist with long high balls down the centre of the pitch hitting the opositions tall strong centre backs who just head everything away.

 

Why not use wide players who get round the back of defenders as other teams do yo us.

 

Very frustrating.

My m o m was Claudio. Never missed a tackle or header all game. So much stronger than Town forwards.

 

BIG effort needed on Monday at Kingstonian to turn this around.

Last Saturday I witnessed a spirited performance from Town to pull back a two-goal deficit at Merstham. Today Merstham knocked Ebbsfleet out of the FA Cup on the same ground. What has changed over the past seven days, why no sparkle from Town today?  One swallow doesn't make a summer, and one defeat certainly doesn't make us a bad side. I wasn't there today, but I do wonder what happened to our ambition,  team spirit, and pride in a local derby match, particularly after reading the comments above. Do you agree or disagree with the views expressed?

The truth Little H is that for the past few weeks we have been papering over the creaks.

With the coming and going of players the team has become disjointed. This is borne out by 2pts out of 6 in the last two games. There was no recognisable system of play and as we have all said the team played like strangers to one and other.

 

I agree with OT it is about time that we got back to basics. I am told we play

with "wing backs". That is all very well if you are a good defender and capable of

also being a good winger but these are hard to find at this level, No it's the

over indulgence by pundits and coaches who have made a simple game into a

difficult one.

 

As I have said before it's up to the manager to devise a system with what he has

and to make sure that the players stick to it. He has two of the fastest players

in the league who can play up front and wide in Campbell and Wynter. All he needs is to

decide who is the best striker to complement them.

 

Too simple, but that is what I call going back to basics.

Got to be positive and back Brad and the boys. I think although it was poor today (and Brad will be the first to admit that) we do have the basis of a decent team there. Just need some hard work and graft both on and off the pitch and we can turn it around. 

 

We had alot of possession in the first half with Wingate playing long balls but didn't trouble the keeper - Second half aside from Dernell's shot which was well saved by their keeper (had that gone in I think we would of gone on and won) there were too many misplaced passes. To say Kirby is the only player who can hold his head up is a little harsh in my opinion. 

 

It's a real tight division at the moment - We are two points ahead of the drop zone (21st place) BUT win at Kingstonian on Monday night and we move up to 8th place ahead of Billericay Town.

Agree with Cold End. The league is very wide open. A good run and we'd be in the top 5. Otherwise it's just another Ryman Premier Season, we won't go down. I thought some of the comments shouted out from behind the goal was'nt necessary, we all have bad days, but we've been 5-6 unbeaten so let's get back on it tomorrow night at Kingstonian and not worry too much just yet.

That by the way was Wingate's fourth London derby win of the season, having already seen off Hendon at home and Harrow Borough away twice. We certainly need to bounce straight back with a big performance at Kingstonian tomorrow evening, to get back on track, answer supporters genuine concerns, and underline our ambition and ability to be play-off contenders this season.

What worries me is that Brad doesn't seem to have a plan B. We took Harry off after 70 minutes and continued to hit it long ! The substitutions we're bizarre, how did Shulton stay on, he was woeful ! Do the players know what formation they are playing in, they all look lost. Also, the crowd appears to be dwindling week on week, people voting with their feet ?

Claudio seemed to fit in so well to their defence in such a short space of time. Some of our guys appeared not to know each other and what was expected of them. One shot on goal during 90 minutes is not good enough.

I respect your view Cold End, we will certainly go up to 8th in the league but for how long. Look at the number of games played by those below us. It is

mathematically impossible for each team to lose all their games in hand.

 

But that is not the cause my and others concerns.

 

We lost to a poor team yesterday but a disciplined team. Their four players at the back kept their formation for most of the of the match and we never had an answer

to this. I never saw this in our team. We had marauding full backs, which looked

exciting, but brought no reward as they seem incapable of delivering a pass. Kirby was for ever having to clean up for them. It is no wonder they were both booked. These were for fouls created by tackles when racing back to get into position.

 

Like all other supporters I want to see the Team progress up the table. I don't

expect wonderful football every week. But I would like to see a team with more

discipline and purpose. A win is a win even if the game plan appears at times

somewhat ugly.

 

I don't know if any one of the management read the FOCUS but I hope Brad comes up with a plan soon. Not just for tomorrow but for each game on it's merits.
