Monkey8
Game of 2 halves at Hadley last night. Hadley should have been out of sight in the first half but fair play to Edgware who battled in the 2nd & with some help of poor defending came out on top. Unite MK FC
Groundhopper report: Buckingham Senior Charity Cup, Quarter-Final - Unite MK 1 Buckingham Athletic 1 (no extra time, Unite MK won 7-6 on penalties) Spectator headcount 34 Admission £3 including very good 20-page programme Coffee £1, steak pie £1, sausage roll 70p (all hot food prepared in a slow cooker!) Plan A of Calne Town disappeared late afternoon with the M4 problems, hence a quick look on FullTime resulted in a 2-hour 50-mile trip for my first visit to the Manor Fields. I arrived 45 minutes before kick-off and managed a quick £3 pint of John Smiths shandy while watching some line dancing in the adjacent Irish Centre. Respect to Unite MK for issuing a programme free with admission for a charity cup, which I wasn’t expecting, when some senior sides can’t be bothered to issue a prog for a county cup (look and learn, Laverstock & Ford). I was told by a committee member the former Wolverton Town renamed themselves partly because they now play eight miles from Wolverton, and partly to ditch their old identity after a recent overly feisty match incident which apparently gave the club very negative local press. I was strangely impressed by Manor Fields. Overgrown behind one goal and down the side with the small seated stand, and the imposing flank-long main stand was partly being reconstructed and partly being used for storage (anyone for a filing cabinet?), but I liked it. The grey and green seats in both stands gave the place some uniformity. Talking of colours, not sure how Unite MK are allowed to get away with their current home shirts – white with white numbers faintly edged in black! Buckingham Athletic started the game like a train and should have been ahead before UMK got back into it. The first half was unexpectedly goalless but, as time wore on, it looked like a solitary goal would decide it. It appeared to be a home win when a goalline clearance from a corner move landed at the feet of Luke Little, who pounded the ball home from 10 feet in the 80th minute. Athletic refused to give up and, in the 90th minute, some pinball from a throw-in ended with Josh Menday walloping it home from ten yards. With no extra time, Athletic were winning the penalty shootout until the last round of five, then home keeper Saajan Seejpal, who’d tucked a pen past opposing custodian Lewis Dench, made two excellent saves to win it for the home team. Note: It was actually Ben Dickens who scored for Unite MK.
