Slough Town v Cambridge City

Recommended Posts

Top the table Slough go in to this game unbeaten in the previous 9 League games, having won the last 7 of those. Cambridge haven't won in their last 4 League games (3 defeats and 1 draw) and are sitting at the bottom end of the table in 22nd place.

I'm confident of Slough making it 8 League wins in a row, we beat Cambridge 3-1 in the FA Cup three weeks ago at their ground on a poorer surface than our excellent 3G pitch where they left the grass suspiciously long to try to stop our passing game, and I'm predicting a comfortable 4-0 victory today at Arbour Park.

The match squad will be picked from the following:

Mark Scott, Jamie Jackson, Sean Fraser, Josh Jackman, Nathan Smart, Paul Stonehouse, Mark Nisbet, Guy Hollis, Dan Hicks, Warren Harris, James Dobson, Simon Dunn, Nathan Webb, Lee Togwell, Adrian Sear, Charlie Moone and Lewis Putman.

Head to Head:

17-09-2016  Cambridge City 1-3 Slough Town FA Cup
09-04-2016  Cambridge City 4-2 Slough Town  League
24-10-2015  Slough Town 3-1 Cambridge City  League
07-03-2015  Slough Town 0-4 Cambridge City  League
18-10-2014  Cambridge City 3-3 Slough Town  League
08-02-2011  Cambridge City 3-2 Slough Town  Red Insure Cup
18-10-1999  Cambridge City 3-2 Slough Town  FA Cup
16-10-1999  Slough Town 1-1 Cambridge City  FA Cup

I'd say a nice win too, maybe go 2-0 up then ease off and coast to a win protecting players from over exertion.

Will try to catch some on rebels radio as Vodafone always have me working during the match!

As ever, respect, but don't fear your opponent. Our good league run will end one day and Cambridge's bad run will too, let's just be professional and make sure it's not today. If we approach the game the way we have in the past few weeks then we should be fine. Tuesday was the perfect tonic after Dartford . We had our top scorer at left back the next two top scorers out injured missed a penalty and still scored 9 !

After today we will be more than a quarter of the way through the season. Then we have 11 league games to the end of November when half the season will be done. Let's finish this quarter on a high , reset the clock and start winning the second quarter with the same style and commitment we have shown in the first.

A good professional 1-0 win, we had to be patient but we got the winner and a great result with Leamington drawing 2-2 at Dorchester and Dunstable losing 2-0 away to Stratford, putting Slough 4 points clear at the top with a game in hand over second place Leamington.

To me it was a stonewall penalty in the first half yet many others say a dive it's a funny old game.

Superb header from Nis to break the dead lock.

A hard fought win with Cambridge obviously very happy to get a draw from this game. We didn't play as well as we have and it seemed that the team struggled to link up with Moone and Putman up front who have both been out of the squad recently.

The "Dunn penalty" in the first half wasn't a penalty but wasn't a dive, he got crowded out in the end and had nowhere to go but should have been given at least a free kick from the previous two fouls moments before.

Charlie Woolfe (#9) for Cambridge was an absolute disgrace. Trying to get Moone sent off for something he hadn't done and holding his face, when the physio came over he didn't even bother to treat him. Just glad the officials didn't buy it and send Moone off.

That is 8 league wins in a row and 5 league clean sheets in a row. Top of the table by 4 points with a game in hand is just surreal right now. A win against Dunstable would be amazing but a draw would still be good.

MotM for me was Dunn but Fraser, Hollis and Nisbet all close behind.

Never thought that goal would come! Massive relief when it did though as what a great header it was. A frustrating game where on another day it could have been a comfortable victory. But to be top with a 4 point cushion plus a game in hand is beyond everyone's wildest dreams.

Seeing as Dunstable Town have lost 4 in a row, scoring just once I'd say we should certainly be looking to beat them on Tuesday.

Looked like it may be one of the days where the away team comes to frustrate and grab a battling point or a scarcely deserved smash and grab win

Would have been easy to start panicking but I feel we did stay pretty calm and finally found a breakthrough a defence that was beginning to live a charmed life

Could not believe the audacity of their 9 who tried his best to provoke a reaction from Charlie Moone and when it wasn't forthcoming just decided to try his luck by faking that he had been struck. A pathetic act of desperation which thankfully did not result in an unwarranted red card for Moone.

Ground out the win in what many thought may turn out to be a more straight forward victory. Credit to Cambridge for not allowing us to be at our best with their gameplan.

It does show the great character and belief these set of players now have and the exact traits that will be needed to continue to stay right up there in the league table.

The first quarter of the season has been amazing, especially with those 8 consecutive league wins and 5 league clean sheets in a row leaving us 4 points clear at the top. The team has been superb throughout and the whole squad have played their part. The defence has been rock-solid, the passing and attacking has been sublime at times, the team ethic can't be faulted, and Slough are looking a formidable side at this early stage of the season.

1-0 or 10-0 still 3 pts. Well done the lads. Cambridge played well above their form so far and I believe they benefitted as others will from playing on our billiard table They play every home game on a shite pitch and a lot of away games likewise Im sure a great pitch lifted them The league is taking shape and it looks like almost every team can beat any other team except Slough Town lol but its very tight from Chesham in 7th 12 teams are covered by 4 points and what has happened to Kettering and St Neots?

Controlled the game and ground out the win. Need to be doing that if you want to achieve. Hit the woodwork at least twice and peppered the keeper with shots from distance. Just didn't look like it was going to click in the final third but good corner from Dobbo and terrific header from Nis gave us the points we thoroughly deserved.

I presume their 9 was substituted as a result of embarrassment. He tangled with Moone in the box from a set play, no foul either way then stuck his boot out in Charlie's midriff, got no reaction and started rolling around. Shameful. Judging from Unders reaction he felt the same!

I think the ref guessed what happened and thought two yellows was the safest option. If anything their 9 should have gone.

Still no harm done but imagine if that had cost us the points and Charlie for a 3 game ban!

On to a toughie Tuesday - COYR

Two things we must thank Charlie Woolfe for, though, was when in the first half he had to two gilt edged chances and mishit them and failed to get them on target !

So Mark Scott certainly had one of his easier games today.

On the other hand, the Cambridge keeper had a blinder and kept his team in the game.  I thought Simon Dunn had a great attacking game today and seemed to be in the thick of the action for best part.

So agree with Staines Rebel Jr about him being MOTM.

Just desserts that we got the win, as we were clearly the better team but we did rather make hard work of it.

Hope we're on top form for Dunstable and Merthyr this coming week, as we are going to have to up our game somewhat, for both of them.

If only football worked like that!

Dunstable will be looking to spoil the party.

I think the realistic, sensible ones amongst us know that there is no such thing as a straight forward win in this division.

I think Cambridge played well above their form only because they came with one aim, to park the bus, frustrate and come away with a point. Because of their limited ability you can't really blame them but in the end justice was done.

The positives are that Dunstable and Merthyr being at home will at least show some attacking intent to win the game and not 'park the bus'.

All the same, as you say two really tough away games that will test our credentials to the limit.

To be fair I think everyone here is realistic and sensible enough to know this, not to mention intelligent enough too. Although, it is one of those common cliches that is used every week in every division in every league no matter what level of football that 'there are no easy games'. Nothing wrong with people being a bit optimistic and confident with the side playing well and enjoying a good start to the season. Many supporters are always pessimistic no matter what about their team's chances or worried they will somehow jinx it if they predict a win for their side, it is the nature of the football fan  :)
