Slough v Ashford

Recommended Posts

Very pleasant evening. Good football , match played in the right spirit and some lovely goals.

Fair play to Ashford they kept going and never stopped trying to play football , no hoofing it even after 9. Good run out for Charlie and Puts looks hungry after his layoff. Nice for the young lad to get the penalty and to,see Jacko get a run out. Great crowd too.

Thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining night of football.

Despite it being the League Cup our players were really up for it producing some really good football and some excellent goals.

Good performances from all the players with Putts getting MOTM for hat-trick and his excellent all round performance on the night.

A very entertaining game but very strange at times with things going from sublime to ridiculous.

Have to agree, the quality of some of our goals was very high, particularly Charlie's overhead effort for the second and Dunn's quality solo third.

Good to see us playing professionally even in a league cup game, particularly seeing as the crowd was bigger than pretty much any league game at Beaconsfield.

Also good to see a couple of young players get a chance as well and very nice of our players to let Raju take a penalty.

Had to feel a bit sorry for their keeper, particularly after standing on the wing side of his goal having set up the wall for Putman's second free kick!

Even with a bit of squad rotation this could be a competition we could go far in.

If we took it seriously and played a strong team then yes we could well win it but as Neil has said along with the county cup both these competitions aren't a priority. Then again if we put out a half decent team and other sides put out much weaker sides we could still progress far. Anyway last night was the perfect tonic to getting back into the groove and great preparation for Saturday.

A good crowd of 314 were rewarded with seeing a 9-2 win. Would have been nice to get to 10, but definitely not complaining about watching Slough score 9. Good to see my old friend Jamie Jackson get a game, brings back many fond memories of playing football together as kids. Well done lads, good luck in the next round.

Despite the shock of the first few minutes, what a good evening for managers, players and fans alike. We passed them to death and although they , to their credit, never stopped trying, the only question after 20 minute was the size of the win.

All our guys and subs played well, Puts showing how much he wants to be back in the team as a starting member. Youth lads looked good and should be involved again when appropriate. Shame the missed pen stopped us getting 10 but a smile on the faces of everyone(bar the few Ashford fans) said it all although maybe still a question mark as to whether a loan forward is desirable for Saturday, despite the number of goals last night

Maybe not after that performance from Putts.

Looking back through the records on the slough town website, last night was our joint biggest win and the most goals scored in one match in the 21st century (in competitive game, we beat Dorking 7-0 in the FA Trophy in 2004)

The last time we won by more than 7 was an 8-0 win against Feltham in the FA Cup in 1990.

The last time we scored more was a 10-1 win against Stroud in the FA Trophy in 1989.

Just a couple of memories: I was standing next to Steve Easterbrook at the start of the North Greenford game and he expressed his concern about playing against such underdogs (as in fairness they were). Once we had scored the first 3 goals I left him to take my normal place behind the goal by which time I think he had stopped worrying! The last goal against Hitchin was scored by Eric Young who bundled his way through the defence (?) with elbows flying everywhere. By rights the referee should have perhaps awarded a free kick against him but I recall that afterwards the ref stated it was the first time that had officiated a 10 goal game (??).

At the time a record victory in the F A Trophy. ( I think it still stands) against Forest Green Rovers who changed their name for one season to Stroud

Looking up on the wonderful data base for "lowen" - 26/9/64 and goals as above plus others. In the one full season he played for us Peter Lowen, who was a workmate of mine at the old Cement and Concrete Association at Wexham Springs, scored according to the data base 56 goals in 47 games.  And he was disliked by some for being "a lazy player".(!)

Huge thanks from us and the team for the support we have been getting recently, to have got 314 for a league cup game last night is brilliant, and it would be fantastic if everyone can make a real push to get people in Saturday before our run of away games.

Seeing so many people in the ground is brilliant, and I am sure really spurs the lads on.

Obviously with any game in our league it is never easy, but we will be right up for this looking to try and make it 8 league wins on the bounce, and if we can keep another clean sheet will be getting on for almost 6 games since we let a league goal in.

The lads have been top drawer since pre season, and we emphasised yesterday how important the next two months will be for us, as if by the end of November we are still in and around that top spot, there is no reason we can't go on and have a real go at winning the league.

Thanks again and COYR

Thanks David for reviving some great memories I had been watching the Rebels for a few seasons when he came along and I agree he was one of the best Shame for such a short time Do you also remember Ken Wallis another who only played for a season and not as prolific as Lowen but hardly played a game without an assist I note the official club website has Lowens record 10 years too early.
