Slough v Ashford

Recommended Posts

So we move on from the disappointment of Saturday's defeat in the FA Cup to Dartford (albeit with the help of a dubious penalty decision) to face next up on Tuesday night Southern League Division One Central side Ashford Town in the Southern League Cup. A competition which I believe Slough Town have never won before? We have won various other League Cups, but I don't think we have ever won this particular version stretching back to the competition's formation in 1932-1933.

It would be great to see the team go on and win this cup for the first time, however, Neil Baker did say after the Dartford game that this competition is not a priority for Slough this year as they will be focusing on the League and the FA Trophy. I hope this doesn't put fans off from attending the game though. I will be there to support the team anyway, hoping for a good win and progressing to next round.

Admittedly hope we don't go full out on this trophy but use it as a place to either field players who aren't able to get as many minutes or to test different tactics.

I don't see Ashford winning though and I'm glad we are at home for it.

league cup is one of the annoying competitions we have to play each year. To win it you have to play 6 matches with no real monetary prizes along the way.

A chance to rotate the team and allow players like Gokmen and Hicks a chance to prove they deserve a run in the starting XI. Also good chance for Moone and Putman to get minutes again with a good opportunity to get back in the goals.

Is Adrian Sears likely to play, didn't seem like he has been particularly willing to play on 3G due to risk of injury (especially after his recent injuries).

I think Searsy might well get some minutes on Tuesday.

Perversely looking forward to watching this game and seeing the other squad players trying to win a place in the first 11.

Just seen that Ashford had the wrong admission charges on their website so I've posted the correct ones on their forum.

And before anyone asks what the admission charges are: £5 for adults, £3 for concessions and £1 for under 16s. :-)

Palms is just a good friend of ours, who will come and sit on the bench to be a body for this particular game, he is very close to retirement, so not in our plans at all if that was what you were wondering.

Nathan would love the opportunity to join the club, but we have told him where we are at this present time, and we shall just see what happens, however he is a very good player and has played at Basingstoke for the last 3 or 4 years week in week out.

He will give the opportunity for Sean to rest for this game.

Should be interesting to see how many turn up with the reduced prices. All the games bar the opener at AP so far seem to have been about double the crowd we would have got at Hollaways for the same game. So should be around 200 there tomorrow night.

4-5 goals were real goal of the season contenders too. I'd probably pick Simon Dunn's as the best of the bunch.

Good for a couple of youngsters to get a run out and for Pritpaul to get his first goal for the Rebels. Looked like we came through without any injuries so job done.

disappointingly only finished 9-2 tonight  :P

Quite a few changes to the starting line up tonight as you might expect plus 2 youth players and Jon Palmer coming on as subs.

We played our typical passing football along with a few individual dribbles and our ability shone threw against the lower level opposition. Dobson played at left back and had to be reminded so a few times after pushing forward to create an overload.

Putman and Moone both got several goals and a good boost of confidence too. Simon Dunn scored a magnificent solo goal after beating most of the Ashford defence before easily beating the keeper. Pritpal Raju also got on the scoresheet after winning a penalty and taking it himself (imo not a foul).

Pritpal Raju and Stephen Bennett the two youth players both did well and I wouldn't be surprised if they got another chance in the B&B in two weeks time.

Good result and confidence boost going back into league games in the coming weeks.
