After just two minutes Viner made an excellent save from a powerful header by Leon Mackenzie, who had ran on to a Harry Agombar centre. Hornchurch had a scare at the other end when a free from Daniel Beaumont found an unmarked Jay Eastoe-Smith, but Sam Mott saved the close range header, and shortly afterwards a Rhys Logan cross cum shot came back off the post. Abs Thompson opened up the defence but there was no one able to force his cross into the net, whilst Ayrton Coley hit a hard shot from the left, which cleared the bar. A Beaumont free kick was deflected for a corner, but Hornchurch had the majority of the territorial play in the first half. Viner made the save of the match - and a contender for save of the season - when he dived to turn a Thompson shot onto the bar and over for a corner, and then Mackenzie and Thompson combined to send the ball out to Coley, whose shot skimmed the far post. Dereham survived a Coley shot in the first minute of the second half, the ball deflecting off a defender for a corner, which led to a second corner when the defence scrambled the ball away. Hornchurch were fortunate on the hour when a free kick eluded everyone, and Joe Gatting, unmarked and just three yards out, scoped his shot high over the bar. David Knight came on for Harry Agombar, and seemed to have a scoring chance when Thompson raced along the right wing and crossed, but Robbie Linford managed to turn the ball out for a corner. Knight had a second chance when he beat the offside trap to run towards goal, but a defender came across to block the shot. Dereham began to come much more into the match and the home defence came under some pressure, and they lost Alex Bentley to an injury, with Elliot Styles coming on. Four minutes from time, Dereham grabbed the winning goal when a cross from the left wing came back off the post and Daniel Morphew reacted first to plant the ball firmly into the net. In the remaining few minutes Hornchurch were unable to penetrate a packed visiting defence, who held out comfortably to take their first away win of the season.
