Local Rivals

SYCOB aren't really rivals. They were chosen to be in the song this time as we were all happy to be away from there.

I would say Most people would agree that Wycombe are our biggest rivals but we hardly ever play them anymore.

Local and more regularly competitive rivals would be Burnham and Windsor, though since windsors revival the rivalry has probably calmed.

This weekend the Maidenhead fans sang a few songs about Slough so you can probably count them as well.

Maidenhead for me, always were back in the day and are definitely our nearest rivals now that Windsor & Burnham have declined. I go to watch Maidenhead (highest placed team in the pyramid in our immediate area) as a preference when in search of a game, but can't bring myself to support them. Apologies Magpies!

I've been watching the Rebels since I was a very little kid and didn't know any better! In the sixties (still a kid, but not so little) Maidenhead were in the Corinthian with us and rivalry was intense. Wycombe were always an Isthmian club and effectively 2 levels above and Windsor were a Delphian club 1 level below. We eventually attained Athenian membership once the Corinthian and Delphian leagues became Athenian, but still below Wycombe. We eventually got into Isthmian once Athenian divisions became Isthmian in the 70s. Maidenhead & Windsor achieved this level via the same route as ourselves (and promotion). Therefore (hopefully) you can see that Wycombe & Windsor weren't our direct rivals as neither were in the same league (division) as ourselves back then. Funny how things go as of course they aren't now either!

I can remember getting the train to Maidenhead to watch them when Slough were away...... old habits die hard..... and I didn't support them then either.

For broadly the same reasons as young Bernie Gogan, it was always Maidenhead for me back in the day, not the least because a lot of the Slough players I had grown to support upped sticks and moved there in the summer of 1959. I was too young to appreciate the machinations of what was then called senior amateur football. Slough took the then Maidenhead manager and some players but it quickly became obvious that, whoever initiated that "exchange", Maidenhead got the better of the deal, at least in the shortish term. I too used to go to York Road on occasions, particularly for their early floodlit games which were atmospheric and exciting. But I never went as far as wanting them to win.

Yes, we were effectively "relegated" (no relegation in those days) that season after the defections, however, we got our own back a few seasons later when we took players from Maidenhead, (Hatt, Mullen, Runicles, Reynolds - maybe more).

Wycombe for me. Only been a supporter since 2002 and at that time we had a rival with Windsor and then later on burnham but Wycombe has and always will be there and talked about.

The few berks and bucks games we have played still bring the fans out from them too which shows the rivalry for such a small game.

For me, I see Slough's rivals as Burnham, Windsor, and Maidenhead, probably just because they are the most local clubs to Slough. We have had a bit of a rivalry with Wycombe over the years, especially during the early 90s in the Conference. Some see Hayes & Yeading as a rival too.

I think it very much depends on when you started watching Slough regularly and of course, the proximity of the teams.

Currently I consider Maidenhead and Chesham, as the teams I want to get one over.

However, Wycombe and Windsor were the focus, as teams I traditionally loathed [plus Woking when in the Conference, as they had a touch of arrogance about them at the time].

To a lesser extent, Burnham and Uxbridge were also once seen as rivals.

I thought Clubs could advise the League who their local rivals were and the matches would be scheduled for Bank Holidays to maximise attendances..... if so that would mean Chesham and Hayes this season (or do the League just allocate these on closest by mileage).

For me, growing up in the 80s it was always Windsor.

Kind of Wokingham, when they ran us close for the Vauxhall Opel title.

We could never beat Aylesbury (who I think did the double over us when we won the league).

Wycombe, I never really saw it as a rivalry as other than location wise, we (with all due respect) were not on the same level as them, support or stadium wise. I always saw Wycombe simply as one of the 'big boys'.

Recent years, I would have to say Burnham, as when they got promoted, their fans were giving it large and were coming out of the woodwork knocking Slough. Funnily, haven't seen them in a while.

Beaconsfield, although they let us play in their stadium, they simply were a bogey side who turned up two times a season when playing us.
