Banbury away - Tue 9th August

I'm in effect agreeing with both Curtis and 3spirit. In my earlier post I was explaining that in the last 10 minutes I was expressing my concern that we were pressing forward when perhaps we should have contained but equally it was good to see our attacking intent. Bit of straight and crooked thinking that but in his post match  interview Neil Baker touched on the same subject. It's then a matter of conjecture as to which approach brings the greater reward. I am excited about this team and am really looking to Saturday's match at Kings Lynn (even though Paula's Cafe is closed and we have to make do with The Red Lion!).

I would say it would be better out of those ten games to win at least five, draw two or three, and lose only one or two, if you want to be fighting it out at the top of the league.

Losing to Banbury away in only our second league game of the season, is no big deal. Sounds like we were unlucky to come away with nothing.

That said, I would have rather drawn the game than lost it.

I love watching attacking entertaining football and so I always want to go for the win but sometimes we need to identify when to be gung ho, and when not to be.

For example on Saturday, when we were playing St Neots, we got a corner in the last 5 minutes of the game[ add to the fact that we were 2-0 up and playing 10 men ! ] when our players waste a golden opportunity to cross the ball and add a third, by playing the short passes to each other in the corner and thus slowing up play which inevitably brought nothing and just wasted time.

Anybody would have thought we were playing in a FA Cup match and protecting a 1-0 lead !

Also had we won the game 3-0 ,we would have been in first place in the table, even if it was only for one game, which would have been good for publicity, if nothing else.

Then at Banbury we hadn't scored in 85 minutes and nor had they, so we need to be street savvy and shut up shop to get the draw.

Better to grind out a good draw on a Tuesday night than get nothing.

It's early days for our team and of course, they are still getting to know each other's play, so plenty of time to sort things out.

For success, though, we will need to be calculated and less naïve, if we really want to be among the best in the division.

As you said you wasn't there, If you had of been you probably of said go for it, as we were the team on top and just before they scored they were wasting time and looked to settle for the point. Mark had hardly anything to do in the game.

Not got the states for the game but would say they had 1 or 2 chances as we had may be 10 ish (I'm including scrambles in the 6 yard box)

With all those chances it seems that on the night our strikers were not quite at the races.

As it seems for the moment that Gavin James and Charlie Moone are our preferred front two how did they play together on the night?

In hindsight should Lee Barney have been brought on earlier to give him more time to try to change things?

It was just one of them games you had to be there to understand it.

Hindsight is 20/20..... with it the Managers may have brought Barney on earlier, they may have shut up shop and taken a point.

But in the heat of the match, and us looking the most likely to score with Moone and James getting and creating goal scoring opportunities, I think there would be very few that would have done anything different.

And because it was a good performance, I wouldn't be surprised if we have a very similar line up on Saturday (it might even be a difficult call as to whether to put Nisbet straight back in).

As Brad Hewitt apparently had such a good game I'd say pretty much certain he'll keep his place. Besides why risk Nisbet if their is no need to?

Absolutely agree with epicrebel. Anyone who was there knows we did the right thing, we were still creating plenty of chances and were looking the more likely to score in the last 10 minutes.

Link to the highlights.

I think it is quite telling that the majority of the highlights are of our attacking play.

It has been said before, but credit to Banbury in all of their reviews of the game they have been very fair and unbiased.

This shows what people who were there how the game played out.

Agree with how different it felt this time round. Well played Banbury.

Epic Rebel and Staines Rebel, I was not commenting on the performance of our team in the Banbury game.

I agree with you, both, in that if you don't witness the game in person, you cannot judge how the teams played.

My posting was about how teams become successful and get to the top of a division.

To be honest, I thought the Banbury game would be difficult, given it was their first home game, they've got a good manager and them winning against Basingstoke on the Saturday.

So to me one point would have been a good result. Three points to us an excellent result.

Sounds like we were very unlucky not to get anything but these things happen.

I stick to my point of view, though, that the best teams in any division are clinical in their decision making. If Slough want to be more than mid to lower table team, it is obvious to say that they will need to improve on their decision making/game management.

This is will be down to the players, as much as the managers.
