Banbury away - Tue 9th August

That's a good interview with their manager, Mike Ford. He left Declan Benjamin on the bench against Basingstoke, let's hope he does that on Tuesday ! ha ha !

Lost 1-0

Be interesting to hear from someone at the game but it seems we played well, defended well but ended up losing.

We should have scored more goals on Saturday and it seems missed chances tonight proved to be our downfall.

I suppose the plus side is that we are creating chances and when we are on top we need to be more clinical in front of goal.

We deserved at least a point tonight and were desperately unlucky to lose late on.

We played some good football tonight but couldn't quite get any luck in front of goal with either the ball just running away from us or Banbury getting a late block in. Our best chance fell to Charlie Moone when he tried to lob the keeper but unfortunately the ball bounced a little too high for Moone to get a clean connection and the ball ended up going kindly to the keepers hands. At the other end of the pitch Hollis and Hewitt were superb tonight, they kept the Banbury attack at bay until the last minute when Banbury got their goal.

MotM was Hewitt who made some excellent tackles and should not have been booked when he was. Very promising from Hewitt as he only got the starting spot just before kick off.

We played very well and should have won, if we had taken our chances it would have all been over at half time.... but we didn't and were undone by the fresh legs of some quick substitutions who had success down our right side.

I suppose it's the old story, if you don't put your chances away....

It happens and on another night some of those chance will go in and we win comfortably.

Have to agree with all that went before. Neil i the post match interview did touch on the last 10 minutes when we continued to press forward  - I was mouthing my personal concern from behind the  goal - but hey we went for the game which I like to see. So obviously a bit disappointed with the result after all the control we had but far from despondent. The team is exiting me and certainly the mood was very upbeat in the mini-coach on the way back. Onwards and upwards. Bring on Kings Langley. COYR!

Do I not like visiting Banbury..

I'm consoling myself with the fact I got to see a whole game this time.

We should have been ahead but the final touch was missing, although to be fair they did start getting behind our fullbacks towards the end and created a few decent chances.

Roll on Saturday.

Such a shame add we played so well, but if you lose playing like that you can't really criticise the team. We had so many decent chances but got caught right at the death on the counter which is where Banbury looked the most dangerous. We played some really good football at times and if we can play like that every game the goals and points will come. Hard to pick out players specifically but Hollis and Hewitt were brilliant at the back.

Onto Saturday and another performance like that hopefully!

I liked us going for the win at the end as well..... it makes the match very entertaining and across a season you are better off winning 5 and losing 5 of those matches than drawing 10.

Banburys post match interview.  -  https://www.mixcloud.com/puritansradio/football-interviews-09-08-16/

Very fair analysis from the Banbury manager. A couples minutes in they also mention why Declan Benjamin was let go, turns out the manager felt he had made a mistake signing him and felt Declan didn't fit into his squad and wanted to let him get game time so pointed him towards Didcot where Declan would be almost guaranteed a starting place.

I would say it would be better out of those ten games to win at least five, draw two or three, and lose only one or two, if you want to be fighting it out at the top of the league.

Losing to Banbury away in only our second league game of the season, is no big deal. Sounds like we were unlucky to come away with nothing.

That said, I would have rather drawn the game than lost it.

I love watching attacking entertaining football and so I always want to go for the win but sometimes we need to identify when to be gung ho, and when not to be.

For example on Saturday, when we were playing St Neots, we got a corner in the last 5 minutes of the game[ add to the fact that we were 2-0 up and playing 10 men ! ] when our players waste a golden opportunity to cross the ball and add a third, by playing the short passes to each other in the corner and thus slowing up play which inevitably brought nothing and just wasted time.

Anybody would have thought we were playing in a FA Cup match and protecting a 1-0 lead !

Also had we won the game 3-0 ,we would have been in first place in the table, even if it was only for one game, which would have been good for publicity, if nothing else.

Then at Banbury we hadn't scored in 85 minutes and nor had they, so we need to be street savvy and shut up shop to get the draw.

Better to grind out a good draw on a Tuesday night than get nothing.

It's early days for our team and of course, they are still getting to know each other's play, so plenty of time to sort things out.

For success, though, we will need to be calculated and less naïve, if we really want to be among the best in the division.
