On a difficult pitch Ilford started confidently and Callum Chafer was quickly called into action, making two excellent saves from goalbound shots. Ricky Freeman returned the compliment for Hornchurch with a hard first time volley from thirty yards, which the home keeper dived to save. Much of the action was at the home end, and a Dave Collis free kick was touched away for a corner. Hornchurch lost Ozzie Kone early in the half when he limped off, and it was ten minutes before George Woodward came on as his replacement. And it was whilst Hornchurch were a player short that they took the lead on 24 minutes. Jed Chouman played a long ball into the goalmouth, Ricky Freeman touched it back, and Leon McKenzie finished off from close range. There followed a spell of heavy pressure, in which Hornchurch forced four corners in succession, two taken by Collis and the other two by Woodward, but Ilford defended well, and there were no further goals until the second minute of stoppage time, when Leon McKenzie fired home his second of the match from a narrow angle. Hornchurch were forced on to the defensive for the first ten minutes after the interval, with Elliot Styles making two fine tackles as the home forwards threatened to break through, although Chafer had little to do, as the defence gave Ilford few scoring opportunities. Ayrton Coley made a rapid run along the right wing before sending over a well placed pass into the centre, when Nic Brown fired a first time shot over the bar. Callum Chafer was again called upon to make an excellent diving save, before giving way to Sam Mott, as manager Jim McFarlane made several changes, introducing Nathan Cooper, Kenzer Lee, David Knight and trialists Germain. Ilford also made several substitutions and there were no further goals, as the home defence held firm.
