v St Neots

Recommended Posts

My first look at the new look side yesterday and I was pleased with what I saw. We were able to bring 3 very good players off the bench as well.

The defensive unit looked good, staying compact and moving up and down the pitch together well. There were a couple of very good aggressive challenges from Guy Hollis on Ogbonna early on and he didn't seem to fancy it after that. Mark Scott had a pretty easy afternoon.

Simon Dunn looks good and I'm already a big fan of Nathan Webb. They bossed the midfield. Lee Togwell worth a mention too when he came on. Played very intelligently in front of the back four, moving the ball well and making their ten men work in the heat.

Dobbo and Wazza were a bit in and out of the game but both were involved in the goals. Dobbo had a good first half but faded with his fitness. Wazza didn't do much 1st half, but had a blinder in the second.

Front two did well. Moone has a lovely touch and movement. Gavin more of a physical threat with pace and power. They are not quite on the same wavelength yet but will be a handful for anyone if they do I reckon.

Having said all that, I thought St Neots were poor and it would have been the same result with 10, 11 or 12 players. I thought Moone made the most of the sending off but when you put your head in like that you can only expect a red. I had a very good view of it but didn't see any biting!

Judging by the crowd it looks like we've done well on season tickets as there was never 350 odd there. Almost felt like pre-season to me, with the big kick off a few weeks away. Good job the players didn't think like that.

COYR!

Just a quick comment on M.O.M. As Match Sponsor it fell to me to pick M.O.M. a task I always find difficult and none more so than yesterday. Has as been commented the whole team played well and it would have been easier for me to have nominated the whole side. Anyway my final choice lay between Charlie Moone and Simon Dunn and for me Charlie edged it. But congratulations to everyone on the performance and I look forward to Tuesday evening at Banbury. One small thing for all season ticket holders which I repeat from yesterday. With the substantial increase in season ticket holders please ensure that you have your ticket with you for all future games. I will not be at the game on 20 August (away celebrating my 70th birthday - help!) and once we enter the new stadium then production of your ticket would be of great help. Thanks. I'll arrange to get this request to be posted on the website as well.

He went in for a block tackle and felt some pain in his medial ligament (inside of knee) and it wasn't getting any better so he came off.

Doesn't appear to be a major problem and hopefully just a slight strain but we'll have to see how it is in the next 24 hours before we know if he will miss any games.

Good start to the match, nice early goal, then seemed to lose our way and control of the play.

Then came the sending off, which from where I was (same position as assistant) looked harsh. What was the officials explanation for the straight red?

Within 10 minutes of the restart we managed to score a good second goal and the match was pretty much over as a contest... becoming a damage limitation exercise for St Neots, and us appearing to be happy with the 2-0 (clean sheet and three points).

A nice start to the season, with lots of potential for improvement.... roll on to Tuesday and Banbury.

St Neots are going to look at their video footage of the game to decide whether to appeal the red card or not.

I was level with the incident, unless the heat was getting to me, the number 5's hand made contact with Charlie's face by way of a slap or a punch.

I might be wrong but that's what I think I saw.

It was a push with an elbow (arm down) - Image84

I was watching it as if I was 10 feet away from it, with the lens I had on yesterday.

The only reason I can think it was a red card was due to the accumulation of a) the tackle B) the push c) being aggressive close up to the ref afterwards.

The aggression is a mandatory yellow now, regardless of previous actions, so maybe he was only going to get a yellow, then he was aggressive to the ref

HR,

So you think it was possibly two yellows? But the ref gave a straight red.

From a suspension/fine perspective is there a difference between a two yellow dismissal and a straight red dismissal? (Maybe a question for one of our qualified refs on this forum).

If you show any form of aggression to another player, however minor, by way of a shove, push etc then the Ref is entitled to give a straight red card.

I would guess the ref yesterday saw the initial foul on Charlie, which warranted a yellow card and then the follow up aggressive behaviour from the number 5 and just gave a straight red.

There is a difference in giving out two yellows and a ref changing his mind from giving a yellow to a red, before the ball is alive again.

One is two yellows, and the other is a straight red, as that is what the ref would be holding up.

There's been a few games on TV where the ref had a yellow in his hand, but before he could show it, changed it to a straight red

2 yellows usually results in a one game suspension

Straight red is usually 3 game suspension but on rare occasions can be more but only for something very serious. The red can be appealed if they have enough evidence and could result in either fewer games suspensions or the red being overturned and no suspension.

2 yellow cards - 1 match

Denying obvious goal scoring opportunity - 1 match

Offensive/insulting/abusive language or gestures - 2 matches

Serious foul play/violent conduct/spitting at an opponent or any other person - 3 matches
