Southern Football League - Odds

So Bet365 now have the odds up for our league and we are 3rd least favourites at 50/1 (I have put a few quid on an each way for us at that price........

The favourites are Basingstoke at 9/2

Following them are Hayes, Kettering & Redditch all at 8/1 and then Leamington & Weymouth @ 12/1

If we go by this then the prediction for relegation is Frome, Biggleswade, Slough & Cirencester

I must say it shows how little the betting companies know around the goings on in the summer at our level. It seems they have an algorithm that is run which will most probably run that 16th followed by 17th has a high chance of finishing in bottom 3 based on history.

Some really crazy odds with Cinderford having had to virtually build a new team at 20/1, Kings Langley half of our odds at 25/1 and Cambridge City who also lost a lot of their players at 20/1.

Nice little spur for our managers and the team when they see we are at 50/1 one of the favourites to get relegated.

I certainly wouldn't mind a little bet on Leamington at 12/1.

Looking at the same thread from last year.

The bookies had Poole (1st), Merthyr (10th) and St Neots (20th) all at joint favourites

With bottom four being Slough (17th), Frome (16th), Stratford (19th) and Paulton (24th)

So they did get 1st and last placed at the right odds but at the same time got St Neots horribly wrong, although if st Neots had kept Tom Meechan that might have been a different story.

For me I think it will be very difficult to pick a league winner right now as on paper a lot of teams look strong. Best guess would be Leamington.

Just had a quick look at the sort of line up we had for the beginning of last season:-

Scott

Fraser

Parsons R

Hollis

McDonald

Sear

Martin

Webb N

Harris W

Putman

Harris S

I would expect with Stonehouse, Nisbet, Dunn, Glikes, Moone and James likely to be in opening game starting line up that we will initially be stronger than last season.

Some of our very good phases of last season, when we looked like a top 8 club, came though when we had Mpi and Strutton up front, or Benjamin in central midfield..... it will be interesting to see how Moone, James, Barney, Dunn and Glikes compare.

The bookies got it badly wrong.

out of those original "favourites" only Leamington have a chance really of winning the league.

Current odds on bet 365

Hitchin - 9/4

Chippenham - 9/4

Leamington - 4/1

Slough - 13/2

Merthyr - 10/1

Chesham - 16/1

Don't worry too much about bookies getting it wrong from here . There job is not to predict the winner but to provide odds based on where the money is flowing. Only when they first publish odds is it their guess, after that it's purely where the punters money goes that drives the odds. If people back a team then the odds fall irrespective of real results to protect the bookmaker. A result like Leicester last year is a massive win for the bookies. The earned millions from the people who bet on Man City, Chelsea , Spurs etc. And paid a few thousand to a couple of people who backed Leicester. So at this stage the odds reflect the 'wisdom of the heard' or rather that part that likes a bet. Whoever wins the race , the clever bookie is always in the money .

As my old grandad always said to me ( when he sent me to put his bets on) , ' when you go into a betting shop there is a reason why there are 3 windows for paying in but only 1 for paying out ! '
