SYCOB friendly

Recommended Posts

Finished 2-1 to Slough. First half goals from Moone (pen) and Stonehouse effectively won the game.

We were very much the dominant team in the first half with the exception of two very early SYCOB chances the ball stayed in the Beaconsfield half of the pitch. Charlie Moone scored from a penalty early on and Stonehouse added the second after his shot was deflected and left the keeper stranded. Slough were very clearly the better team in the first half and could easily have scored one or two more. Second half SYCOB pressed us much more and restricted our time on the ball and made the game much more evenly balanced and were rewarded for their hard work with a late goal.

Not sure we can learn too much from this game as in the first half we were so dominant and the second half we made quite a few changes. Adam New played at left back for a while in the second half so he might become back up for Stonehouse when needed during the season. Also I noticed Webb took another nock to his lower back after falling heavily and seemingly hurting it on Saturday so hopefully that won't become a problem for him.

Overall you would have to be quite happy going into the season with the squad Neil and Jon have put together, there is plenty of strength and depth to the squad. How well we do in the league though is anyone's guess but I would be very very surprised if we were relegated.

I think we learnt that Dunn and Webb could be a good centre midfield pairing, and there is going to be some competition for the right back position, as Jackman put in a good performance, and Gilkes, Putnam and Harris as wide midfielders will be competitive.

I thought the spine of the team was accomplished in their efforts tonight ie Mark Scott, Mark Nisbet, Simon Dunn and Charlie Moone, which will bode well for the start of the season.

Credit to the young fit Beaconsfield side, they worked our players well in terms of running but as has been said in one of the above posts, Slough controlled the first half. We were not as good second half but nothing to lose sleep about.

Thought Josh Jackman wasn't as good tonight, from what I saw from him on 3g against Godalming but he has two more games to impress, to earn that starting place at right back in the first league game.

I think I would start Sean Fraser at right back against Fleet but start Josh Jackman against Harrow Borough, as we still need to see how good he will be against better opposition.

We know Sean Fraser is up to the task, so it's proving to be a good competition between them for the right back slot.

Jackman played the full 90 against Farnborough on Saturday who are the strongest team we have played so far and he was very impressive.

I thought Josh Jackman had another solid game.

SRJ and Reading Rebel, I'm not saying Jackman was terrible but I thought he'd show more than he did against Sycob.

Bit harsh by me, perhaps, as it is very early days for him but to keep Sean Fraser out of the team, I just want to see more I suppose, as Sean finished last season in fine form and is chomping at the bit for a starting place this season.

Good workout tonight against a young and energetic SYCOB team.

I thought our work rate and approach play in the first half was excellent and with better finishing we should of scored a few more.

Second half was a bit more even and I'm really not sure if we took our foot of the gas or our energy levels dropped.

Overall I think their were a lot of positives to be taken from the game.

Defensively we looked solid, in midfield I thought the Simon Dunn and Nathan Webb partnership looks promising and we created a lot of chances.

The only real negative is that we seemed to pick up a few injuries which hopefully are not too serious.

Liked the movement of the front two with Gavin taking players away leaving space for Charlie. Liked the preparedness of players to shoot when opportunities arose.Liked the way the players, despite the changes tended to be aware of where each other were, even if some of the passes went astray. We would all have our ideas as to a likely season starting team and I agree that Nathan and Simon Dunn look right for the central midfield leaving several to fight for the places on the flanks---we havent even seen Togwell yet.Discussions last night re potential captain...I stick by my advocacy for Sean Fraser as I am not sure it is right for a new player to come in as skipper. Gary Macdonald being the example of getting it wrong before.Sean seems popular with the other players and is our longest serving player

.....but will Sean start the first game, Graham, if Josh Jackman gets the right back slot and Simon Dunn and Nathan Webb start in midfield ?

IMO there a few places up for grabs and a few players that have nailed down a starting spot.

IMO players who have nailed down a place in the starting 11:

Mark Scott

Paul Stonehouse

Simon Dunn

Nathan Webb

Warren Harris

Charlie Moone

I think all the other places are up for grabs.

That's strange because I don't see it like that.

For me I see it as Mark Scott, Mark Nesbit, Simon Dunn, Lewis Putman and Charlie Moone as definite starters.

I think Josh Jackman and Sean Fraser is a wafer thin toss up for who gets the right back slot.

Paul Stonehouse would be a definite starter if fit but seems to have a niggling injury and has been a bit rusty. I wouldn't mind Adam New or Sean Fraser filling in for him till he's ready.

Guy Hollis has a lot on his plate right now and so I think Brad Hewitt may start a few games alongside Mark Nesbitt.

Guy, of course, is our number one defender but we have to be patient that his head is in the right place, before he's rushed into the league matches

Straight choice between Nathan Webb, Lee Togwell and Sean Fraser in midfield. For me currently Nathan Webb leads the way.

I have Harrison Gilkes above Wazza currently for right wing but the managers may favour the other way around.

Up front Charlie Moone and Gavin James look to be the obvious starters with Lee Barney replacing one of them as a sub.

My concern with Gavin James is he has great movement and pace but is not finding the net, yet, but I still think he will probably edge it to start with Moone up front.

I forgot about Mark Nesbit, yes another nailed on for me.

I thought Harrison Gilkes was more of a left sided player (been playing there all pre season) although he can probably play on the right as well.

Just going by pre season I think the choice between Gavin James, Lee Barney and Charlie Lasosso is a close call.

On paper most would probably go for the 'big man little man' option up front but for me it's debatable from what I've seen so far.

Gavin James has had his moments so far in pre season but at the moment is struggling to find the net and although he looks to be the obvious link player for Charlie Moone, as a number nine for me he needs to score on a regular basis.

Lee Barney is a natural goal scorer and I'm always impressed with his work rate and movement.

I'm not sure if Charlie Lassoso is an out and out striker or a player who is a type of number 10 who can play just behind the striker. Again I like his movement and the quality he has shown in pre season.

Some difficult decisions to be made but a great position for Bakes and Unders to be in with just over a week to go before the big Kick Off.

Graham, I don't think Gary Macdonald was necessarily the wrong choice as skipper just not good enough at his age to be in the starting 11.

Gilkes has played on the right TWICE so far in pre season vs Didcot and Farnborough.

It will be tough to choose who starts but I would imagine there will be a fair bit of rotation between them.

One question I would have though for Neil and Jon is if we are playing with much more attacking wing backs in Jackmsn and especially Stonehouse, why don't we use inverted wingers?

A couple of times already I've seen Stonthouse in particular push coward past Putman and pass the ball back to him on the corner of the box, free, in a great place to shoot but Puyman can't because of the poor angle he gets from his left foot position.

I'd try to answer your question SRJ if I only knew what you were talking about. What's an inverted winger?

Also who's Jackmsn, Stonthouse and Puyman   ;)
