The nature of friendlies

i think we've all experienced pre-seasons where results have been great only for the league season to start badly and vice versa. It just goes to show results don't matter in friendlies but I think we'd also all prefer to win them as of course winning is a habit and breeds confidence. I used to attend these games but don't anymore because they are just training games and I'd rather watch when the real action starts a week Saturday.

Each to their own but personally I like to go to friendlies to build up my own opinions on our new signings and potential new signings.

Having said that this pre season, for one reason or another, I've only seen the Godalming game but fully intend to watch our three remaining pre season games.

Of the above list SRJ gave, can't see Hewitt staying given the errors he made plus we already have 4 centre backs. I would think we'd like to keep Losasso but he may have other irons in the fire. Not sure we've seen enough of Dobbo so far this time around to see if he's worth giving another chance? Maybe he'll be given the last 3 games to prove his worth. Surprised we've not had more strikers in pre-season and look likely to start with 3 in the squad.

If Dobbo was willing, I would have liked to have kept him, so that he vies with Lewis Putman for the left wing spot. Ideal for freshening attacking play from the bench, as we can do with Harrison Gilkes and Warren Harris on the right.

As I've only seen two friendlies [Didcot and Godalming] hard to make a call on Brad Hewitt but now we know that Dan Hicks is suspended for the first 3 games and with Guy's unfortunate problems, we will need to keep him.

Joel Jackman impressed me at the Godalming friendly and he seems more than just a right back, so if he's done well at Hendon Tournament, he must have a good chance of staying with us.

I'm not as convinced about Charlie Losasso, not because he's looked a bad player but mainly because we have a number of very small players and I believe to get anywhere near to winning this league, you need bigger, stronger players in key areas, as Poole and Corby have proved in the last two seasons.

We've made some very good acquisitions this season but I still feel that we are not quite the finished article yet, in terms of the players we will need to get us in the top 5.

As all the players have now been put on the squad listing on the Slough Town website in the last hour, does that mean they now are the official squad, or could it still be open to change?

As a regular visitor to your forum, I thought you might be interested in this.

I used to be an Official of DFC, and part of my re-mit was running a Club web-site.  I always used to update it with information on PSF's  -  Who was trialling, scores, performance etc., etc.

Under the new DFC ownership, it transpires that PSF's are of no interest as far as the web-site and supporters are concerned.  This seems a little short sighted as far as I am concerned.  I fully appreciate it that these games are nothing more than training games, giving hopefuls a chance and allowing management to make plans for the following season.

This paragraph sums up exactly why England will not win a major international trophy in the near future. Too many people in the English game are more concerned about a players physical attributes than their technical attributes. The English game has hardly changed mentality since the creation of football in the mid 1800's, which came about to turn boys into men by making them compete physically against each other. For some reason the English view on what the model footballer should be like has not really changed with the emphasis still being on size rather than skill.

Ability trumps physicality every time!

Most of the best players to have ever played would never have made it in the English game because they would have been considered to small and weak to compete. That includes players in every position.

An interesting analogy, Junior Rebel, and I tend to agree.

I'd be intrigued to know your views on the new England Manager appointment !

So wrong the non league game has always had a good mix of physical players. As for your other point are you saying Jimmy Greavse would not have made it being as he was so small, and that was in an era of good players being kicked to pieces.

I actually like Big Sam as England manager for this very moment as he will bring order back into the English game but I don't expect him to take England very far and is only a "temporary" manager due to the lack of other viable English managers.

That said if I was on the FA board and looking at long term potential winning managers I would have tried to bring in Laurent Blanc as he is already tested at international management and in that time helped France to get rid of the "old wood" and bring through the young talented players. Part of France success at this years Euro was down to him bringing through the young players. However I think it was quite clear the FA wanted an English manager.

One of very few exceptions including players like Bobby Moore and Bobby Charlton.

But you can compare that to modern day when the same view of bigger is better still rules with players like Jamie Vardy being released by Sheffield Wednesday for being too small and weak and when actually given a chance he set a premier league record for most consecutive games scored in.

Also you still make my point in a way as Greaves proved that "small" players are still as good as "big" players.

Edit - I wasn't trying to say that "small" players never got the chance but too many were overlooked

I agree with the above two posts.

It is obvious that the English F.A., wish to continue with an Englishman in charge.

Unfortunately, I have to say that there are very few Englishmen in management capable of doing the job.  It's a fact of life these days.

Already the press are saying that Big Sam won't confirm Rooney's position.  As much as I don't rate Rooney as a person capable of promoting English sport, I DO respect him as a commited national player.

We'll have to wait and see who Big Sam appoints as his back room staff.

Time will tell.

You are mis-reading what I actually said. No where have I said that small skilful players aren't wanted in a football team.

I would say that the honest answer to your question is that the list of players on the website IS the official squad at this point of time, and yes can, and might change anytime between now and the end of the season
