Hornchurch started strongly with Abs Thompson racing along the wing, only to be brought down by a wild tackle. The free kick found David Knight, and Max Hucker made a good save to keep the close range shot out of the net. Both teams conceded free kicks in dangerous positions early in the match - the Police kick rebounded off a post and George Purcell fired his attempt too high and over the bar. Hornchurch had the better of the territorial play, and when Purcell played Knight through the middle, Hucker left his line quickly to smother the ball as Knight attempted to take it around the keeper. Hornchurch took the lead on the half hour when Purcell played an excellent pass to David Knight, who lobbed the ball over Hucker from a narrow angle. Knight went close after a good build up involving Thompson and the impressive Will King, and Hucker in another one on one run again denied Knight. Within a minute of the second half, Thompson made a penetrating run along the right and his cross found Purcell, who took the ball on the volley but directed his shot too high and over the bar. Hucker denied knight for the third time with a one on one run trough the middle. At the other end, Callum Chafer had little to do, apart from field two crosses from the right wing. The Police drew level on 59 minutes when Etman Hislett neatly finished off a right wing cross from close range. Police missed two more chances, on both occasions being let down by erratic finishing, before Ricky Freeman saw his cross cum shot cleared off the line. The Police took the lead when Jandir Da Cruz appeared to play the ball firmly out for a corner, but a penalty was awarded, and Rob Bartley fired the ball hard past Chafer. Three minutes later it was Hornchurch’s turn to be awarded a penalty when Jason Dobson was brought down in the area, and Ricky Freeman crashed the ball hard into the net to level the score. The Police can consider themselves fortunate to get away with a draw, though they can thank keeper Hucker for three fine stops to prevent Knight from adding to his total.
