Update to the laws of the games

Recommended Posts

I remember that law, I was at Wokingham FC at the time. It was an experiment that was supposed to speed up the game. All it did was encourage defenders to quickly put the ball down when they were awarded a throw and punt it up the other end. (Long Ball).  It failed I'm afraid.  Still you can't have a go at people trying new things out. It has to be done somewhere.

Another answer required please.  In the Wales match yesterday 2 wales players heavily collided, Both received treatment but neither were asked to leave the pitch afterwards. Has this law changed as well or did the Ref cock up. Can somebody enlighten me please.

I think you'll find it's not a law change it's always been there. If 2 team mate are down, both can stay on.

A change came in in the summer where the team with the injured player(s) do not have to be penalized again, by them going off.

This was in the link that SRJ posted earlier in this thread, where a player can have a check up on the field and not go off It does not state if that change is for ALL circumstances or on the referee's discretion. In fact it doesn't say much at all.

Probably the latter though, as players have also been asked to go off the field of play, as well as some not

Latest addition from the FA.

If it actually is enforced then some teams are in trouble.

They did this a few years ago when nearly all the Man U (I think it was Chelsea players as well) players kept gathering around the officials.

It was around the time when Roy Keane played for Man U. It lasted for a while then Officials eased up on it.

I've have always said that refs have been their own worst enemies by allowing themselves to be approached and surrounded by players baying for someones blood.

I think a ruling was set a few years ago that only the skipper could approach the ref but this was hardly ever adhered to.

A ref should, before a match, go into each teams dressing room and point out that if any player other that the captain approaches him following an incident then that player/s will receive a yellow card followed by a red card if they didn't go away or repeated the incident. I'd be very happy if the zero tolerance approach was used and a straight was dished out to the offenders.

Not open to too much interpretation then ....

YELLOW :

  • Confronting an official face to face;
  • Running towards an official to contest a decision;
  • Offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures towards match officials;

RED

  • If a player confronts match officials and uses offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures towards them;

So if a player does one of the things in a non aggressive manner, it's a yellow, BUT do both and it's a red

This is going to be a mine field, with every ref having their own view of what is aggressive, and if the ref's on the TV matches are lenient then players in the lower leagues will try it on more.

This needs the ref to talk to both teams before the match to say what he regards as yellow and red card offenses

Combine this plus the new rule of yellow cards for keepers coming off their line at penalties. Penalties could become extremely costly for some teams.

One thing I would say is that Neil and Jon have done a very good job to reign in our players in these situations so hopefully we won't be too badly affected by this clarification of the rules.
