Update to the laws of the games

Recommended Posts

If the slide tackle is made in front of the players and not aimed at the players legs then they would not be sent off. As the intent was to block the ball not to hurt the player.

As I said

The attacker goes across the front of the defender, the defender kicks the ball then goes down from kicking the attackers studs. The attacker has been getting a yellow. But in this new law it would become a red because of the intent.

Only the ref will know what he/she thought the two players actual intent was, even if he/she is wrong.

The player may have only been going for the ball with no intent on the other player, but that doesn't matter, it's only what the ref thinks that matters, and if the ref thinks that players had intent, then it's a red.

That's the trouble with laws like this where it is all down to interpretation.

There will be differences from ref to ref, and also differences from the same ref in one game to another, or one tackle to another

That's why the magic words often appear in the Laws.

"If, in the opinion of the referee..........."   !

It's always open to interpretation of the one, two or three people in charge.

Or, to put it another way, 'One Mans Meat Is Another Mans Poison.' !

Picking up on Billy's point - this thread is about violent conduct without contact (e.g. someone taking a swing at someones chin but missing). In the incident cited there is contact so really not part of this debate. Whether  the referee would decide that in any case this was violent contact opens up another debate.

I don't understand this about 'contact with an opponent'. As a ex referee as far as i know the laws of the game have always said that ' A player who strikes or attempts to strike an opponent shall be sent from the field of play'.  Was this changed and has now been reinstated, If so i must have missed the previous change when they made it.

This thread proves what a very tough time the officials have, with all the slightly different interpretations of some of the changes being mentioned.

Also those interpretations we have all mentioned have not come from a split second decision that the ref will have to make at that specific time from his unique angle to the incident at that time.

Very tough job

Players are very clever now, If you watch Hazard at Chelsea he dribbles with the ball and waits for the opponent to catch him up and then he steps across in front of them which means the opponent can do nothing else but collide with him and bring him down.

If you want to call this cheating then its very easy to do and leaves the Ref no option but to award a free kick or penalty although it is clearly instigated by the attacking player.

Jamie Vardy's penalty when he was sent off was similar except that he is not as subtle as Hazard and made it look to obvious that he had done it.

A forward running with the ball pursued by a player and then cutts across across him drawing the foul, for me, is not cheating it's very clever play by the forward.

I agree.

That's why I gave my point about the forward trying to block a clearance. Not a foul but gets a yellow but with the new rule if the Ref thinks so It'll be a red.

Can anyone inform me if the law has been changed where a player who celebrates a goal and jumps the barrier and runs into the crowd automatically receives a yellow card.  It happened in the champions league final when the Athletico Madrid scorer jumped the barrier and ran up the steps and kissed his wife/girlfriend.  No card was issued by the English referee.

Tonight i have just seen the Hungarian forward in the Euros score and jump the barrier  go up the steps and right into the crowd. Again no card was issued.

Has this punishment been removed, Can anyone tell me.

Thanks for the info epicrebel, No mention of players leaving the field of play after scoring so the yellows should have been issued.  It will be interesting to see what happens about the keepers getting a yellow for coming off their line at a penalty.  Nearly every keeper creeps forward, Cant see many cards being given for this. Will be keeping an eye on this.
