16/17 First Additions To the Squad

I think the main word here is Agent.  When they get their hand on you they want to make money, the only way that'll happen is with a move. this isn't the first time.

Forget his name the Asian lad that went to QPR under Bateman. Not sure where he is now.

You'll probably faint now, Mark, but I agree with you !

Yes he may go on to play higher, he may not, however that in all honesty is not our concern

Vardy was playing at our level for Halifax when he moved to Fleetwood with a sell on clause in the contract..... if he moves to Arsenal then Halifax will likely receive in excess of £1 million because of that sell on clause.

I'm not saying Ryan Hope is a Jamie Vardy, but we are or could be at a level within a season or two where developing youth and securing sell on clauses could be a significant asset for the Club.

(Often these only pay off in the long term and are not necessarily beneficial to the current management, but are for the Club and for a future manager)

I think there are two significant points in Neils reply to the forum Firstly the two managers who alerted Neil to the situation both manage teams at our level so no attempt there to join a team at a higher level secondly when spoken to he made it clear that he wanted away regardless of what was said imo this can only be because he didnt have the confidence to prove himself the equal (or better) than our quality newcomers I wish him well wherever he washes up but Im happy Neil and Jon have made the correct call

3spirit, would your post have been any different?

Neil, has explained the facts and it sounds like Ryan Hope has had his head turned, by whoever [agents, football mates etc]. Poor advice by the sound of it.

I think Ryan Hope thinks he's a better player than he currently is and is jumping ahead of himself but I still think our managers have been a bit hasty in letting him go.

I would have tried to keep him at the club till about Christmas and then seen where we were at, with him,

as I think we need some continuity in the central midfield area ie Nathan Webb and Ryan Hope to bring stability to our squad, rather than making loads of changes and starting all over again, as we have had to do season after season.

Of course Ryan isn't going to start every game and whatever team he goes to, he will find this out.

To me Ryan currently is on the fringes of the first team, not a mainstay regular of the side, so I can see why Bakes and Unders made the decision to let him go.

To me, though, he is a work in progress and a player I would have had a bit more patience with, regardless of the video he made.

The point is you say " I would have tried to keep him at the club till about Christmas"  Who knows if he would stay a week or 4 months that was the problem. the post this after a good dose of smelling salts.

any player not on contract could leave at any time.

Yes that goes without saying SRJ. I think the vast majority agree with the decision. I can't see this coming back to bite us on the bum and Ryan has been ill advised on this occasion, although will be very interesting where he ends up and if he's a regular this coming season.

I'm only concerned with players that want to be with Slough and give 100% to the team no matter what role they have. Ryan is a decent young player but certainly isn't a starting central midfielder for a side looking to push through the Southern Premier. He might have been able to play himself into that role, but maybe not. His performances last season certainly wouldn't make me be disappointed he isn't with us next year, especially if he wanted to be a starter no matter what.

Right decision once again by the managers.

Strange that his agent was also touting him to clubs at our level. I far as I know he lives fairly local so it was either for more money or as you say he didn't fancy his chances and wanted to try and get a more regular game at another club.

I don't think Bakes said he wanted away regardless, just that he didn't give the answers that they wanted to hear. Could have been that he wanted to stay but to also keep his options open, which of course was not acceptable.

I said it is no interest to us what he does now as he is no longer a Slough player. Your Jamie Vardy's are few and far between, and if we are lucky enough to stumble upon one I can assure we will be doing out utmost best to safeguard the clubs interests, however that was not the case with hopey.

In terms of Halifax they will not receive a single penny from a move to Arsenal, the only side likely to get a sell on if one was agreed (and I think it was) is Fleetwood, as Halifax got a sell on from his move from Fleetwood to Leicester.

I think you can count on 1 maybe 2 hands the sides that have received in excess of 100k as a sell on fee from non league in the last 10 years, so it is not very common.

As I said the Jamie Vardy situation is fairly unique.

If Vardy ends up getting transferred abroad, any club who trained him and provided him education between his 12th and 23rd birthday would also get a solidarity compensation of up to 5% of the transfer fee.

This only happens if the player is transferred abroad though. so some might be crossing their fingers that he turns down Arsenal and instead joins Barcelona or Real Madrid. :P

The Jamie Vardy situation is fairly unique and rare. Though he is not the only current premier league player to have played non league. Chris Smalling started at Maidstone United, Troy Deeney played at Chelmsley Town and Charlie Austin who of course played for Hungerford, Poole and Kintbury.
