16/17 First Additions To the Squad

I've got nothing against Sean Fraser, but have always favoured central players captaining a side on the pitch (centre backs or central midfielders).... I feel they are generally in a better position to motivate and get across a message to the whole team when required.

Off the field club captain is often something very different and a role I think Gary Neville fulfilled well for Man Utd for several seasons.

At most of non league level it is usually quiet enough for any player on the pitch to talk to any other, so in that case players in any position can get a message across to other players.

A captain needs to be respected by his team mates that way no matter how loud or quiet they are, when they talk others listen !!!

Sean Fraser has been excellent since his arrival. He took over from Simon Sweeney and had big boots to fill but has stepped up and done very well. In his 166 appearances you can probably count his bad performances on one hand.

Defenders often make the best captain choices as they can see the whole game in front of them.

I can certainly see where Curtis is coming from.

All the years I was playing football it was almost always one of the center backs that was made captain. Obviously he had to be respected by the other players but also a center back was central to the back line and midfield and as such had the best view of what was going on in front of him and could talk to or get messages across to either side of the pitch much easier than if you were stuck out on a limb.

Seeing the larger picture is one the main things that make a good captain, and why so many fail.

It is so easy to just concentrate on your task including those very near to you, such as the back line.

It takes a very good person to also concentrate on helping the other members of the team as well as themselves, especially when they are not having the best of games themselves.

In respects to Sean, I've been really impressed with him, both when he's taken on the captain role or when someone else has the armband. It hardly changed the way he played, which is what you need.

Guy Hollis and Sean Fraser are both worthy candidates for the captaincy, given their good attitude and how they play with their heart on the sleeve for our club but I think we should wait and see what our new recruits offer in pre-season, before we make any such decision.

Seems that's what Bakes and Unders are going to do anyway.

For me, Guy is ahead of Sean, in terms of the captaincy role but to be honest, I would rather they get another season under their belt at Premier division level, to concentrate on their own game and to give them the freedom to play, rather than them having the burden of being the skipper.

Being that we have a possibility of increased attendances, higher expectations and the new challenge of 3g, I would be looking for an  'experienced head'  to lead us this season.

From what I have seen I think the captaincy has a negative effect on Guys play, so I would rather let him get on with being the excellent defender he is as opposed to burdening him with the captaincy.

Sean did very well in the few games at the end of season and would I'm sure be a worthy candidate.

I just hope whomever ends up being the captain doesn't come under the "curse" that we have seen in recent seasons;

Foulser- never play again due to injury

Mclurg - lost any idea of how to play and is released

Mcdonald- the less said about him the better

Sear - couldn't shake any injury he got

I'm sure there are more that people can think of, do all I want from our captain to start with is to maintain their playing ability and not get some kind of crazy long injury.

Didn't want to get involved with this as dont like these sort of posts but have to stick up for Jamie here. I think it was more that fact of having gorgeous twin boys and working full time might be more the case than "lost any idea of how to play" one baby is hard enough but two has to be really hard.

Definitely Sean for me as I agree it clearly affected Guy's play when he got the job whereas it seemed to enhance Sean...cant agree that it might be someone who comes in now as he would be an unknown so far as fit is concerned...think Macdonald to prove my point.

While it is evident that Gary McDonald had a torrid time and a largely unsuccessful spell at Slough, you could also argue the case that our centre midfield at the time hardly helped the cause of our defence and that Gary was thrown into the deep end a bit as the dominant centre half, when he had been playing as defensive holding player for Hayes and Yeading the previous season.

This isn't a criticism of our managers to play Gary at the heart of defence. As given Gary's non league experience, before a ball had been kicked, he was well worth taking a chance on playing there and anyone who had seen him over the years would have taken that option.

No manager/s have a crystal ball to know who will be a success and who will not.

While I can see your point ,Graham, I don't happen to believe it's true.

Some players look natural leaders and can fit right in, especially when they been on the circuit awhile and are known faces and have been playing at a higher level  ie Trevor Howe, Darren Wilkinson, Steve Daly, Steve Perkins, Dave Woozley etc. All Slough players that are great examples to prove my point.

It remains to be seen, if we will get a natural fit for captain this season.

We shall have to wait and see.....

We don't yet know who this center back is that our managers are trying to get in and until we do we don't know whether he is in the running to be captain or not.

If he is, hopefully pre-season will provide the opportunity for him to get to know and get the respect of the other players

Listening to Bakes on Rebels Radio I was thinking who the 'familiar goalie' might be who is coming along to give us 3 keepers in pre-season to give Mark Scott some competition

Could it be Alex Lynch, who has been released by Wycombe?

He played on loan at our level for Burnham in 2014/5, and Stamford in 2013/4.

By 'familiar' I would think that it's more than likely to be a keeper that has played for us before.

My money is still on James Warrington.
