Stamford reprieved and Corby to SL Prem (both expected), Cinderford accommodated in SLSW by moving Evesham to NPL Div 1 South, definitely unexpected and quite possibly the maddest of some mad placements in recent seasons.

Evesham have the right of appeal and by the reaction of their supporters on Twitter ought to take it.

Not much else they could do though is there?

who would you move around to accommodate Cinderford back into their level?

Cinderford should really have announced earlier that they couldn't afford going up.

Tricky. Histon were suggested but they would be just as far away from the bulk of the division. Any other option would have involved a lot of movements.

The FA could be really daring and go with 23 and 21 clubs in the two divisions...

The problem then though is the teams in the bigger league would claim it is unfair on them as it is harder for any of them to get promoted. Plus problems financially of travelling further.

It is a tough problem and at this point any team that gets moved will claim it's unfair on them.

Someone on the Kettering forum suggested keeping everything the same with the next team in Cinderford's league getting promoted instead of them.

But that would just open up a different can of worms with the other teams who would expect to get reprieves etc.

With 23/21 no one else has to be moved ... BUT ... irrespective of numbers S&W will be a hard division to win with Hereford and Salisbury in it so Evesham might just think about that when they've calmed down and ask themselves if they think they have a better chance in the NPL.

If Cinderford had said before the end of the season that they didn't want promotion then assuming the same final positions, Banbury would have gone up as of right and Evesham would have been in the play-offs.

It will be interesting to see if Cinderford get any kind of punishment for declaring late. Also considering their late decision will now cost Evesham a lot as well, not just in terms of travelling but also missing out from gate money vs Hereford and Salisbury.

Clearly a massive disappointment for the players, management and supporters of Cinderford. Surely though the Directors must have know the situation before the play-offs. Whilst it would only add to the current financial difficulties the League perhaps has no choice other than to impose a fine. At the Southern AGM on 18 June perhaps a rule change is needed - all clubs not intending to take promotion either by dint of being Champions or via the play-offs should notify the League no later than say 1 week before the start of the play-off semifinals - with a penalty to be invoked if this rule were to be transgressed. This rule to run throughout the Pyramid with the other Leagues agreements.

Exactly David, you telling me no person at the club was aware they couldn't afford to go up anytime during the season? I can't believe they only sat down and worked out costs once they won promotion and thought hang on we can't do this!!! Some rumours suggest they want to stay down as Hereford United will be in their current league next year and the potential revenue that could generate (along to a lesser extent Salisbury also).

There was a rumour going around the division sometime during February/March that the club was having doubts.

  • 3 weeks later...

All change! Cinderford have been told to take their place in SLP, Stamford are relegated, Corby are in the NPL Premier and Evesham are in SLS&W. Well, at least until Cinderford resign from the league, which is possible. If that happens then the changes could be reversed...

Maybe it's me but wouldn't a club committee be aware of costs (even roughly) of the league higher? I'm sure some simple calculations of extra travel costs, higher wages and other associated costs would determine whether it was affordable or not pretty quickly? Maybe they never thought the team would win the league...
