Skipper

We have had a number of captains this year, not all of whom are still with us. So interesting to note that Sean was still skipper yesterday even with other captains such as Guy and Dan still in the team. In Sean's case , the responsibly has lifted his game from his usual level of very good to absolutely excellent----he is our longest serving player so maybe the job could be his for next season. Other thoughts , please ?

As far as a captain who is vocal, we really haven't got one in our team at the moment.

I was right in line with our back line in the first half and no defender ever called for the ball once especially when the ball was in the air.

I personally think it is something we have to address next season if we are to stop conceding so many goals.

You could say the same about our midfield, we just don't have any player in midfield who is vocal and commands the midfield.

I agree with you Graham that Sean has certainly had a very good consistent season.

On the question of captain, it really depends on what supporters and in particular what our managers want from a captain.

I think a Captain should lead by example and most of all be respected by the other players in the team. He should be vocal enough to encourage other players and vocal enough to dish out bollockings when required.

My idea of a Captain and probably the best I've seen at this level is Poole Town's Jamie Whisken, not blessed with skill but a real leader who never stops encouraging and talking.

You can't just get respect at a drop of a hat and it doesn't often work by bringing in a experienced, pedigree player, if your current players don't like him, or know him well !

Whoever the captain is, he has to earn the respect of the players. It isn't simply about shouting at people and making yourself out to be some super human.

Trust and faith in the captain, can take a lot of games to get to.

From my view, in regards to next season we will need to find to find another leader of men on the pitch but I certainly would not rule out the merits of Guy Hollis or Sean Fraser as vice captains or potential captains in their own right in the future.

However, we are currently a team that can go into it's shell on occasion, so it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that we will need a couple of strong personalities to progress us especially in a new stadium and what potentially could be bigger crowds.

You can respect a players experience and playing record but you also have to respect them as a person.

Our managers have said that they look at more than just ability when signing a player and in that respect all a new player needs, if he is to be captain, is a period of time i.e. the close season training and friendlies to gel with the other squad players.

I haven't said it's all about just shouting at other players. It's more about encouraging and talking to players and if a player does need a kick up the backside then so be it.

It's also about talking and communication. Little things like wanting and calling for the ball in the air, sounds simple but I didn't hear any of that in the first half on Saturday.

Not disagreeing with anything you said, RR. Just adding to it, that it isn't always easy to wave a magic wand and find captain material.

When you look at what Guy Hollis achieved at presentation evening, there's a good case for him being the skipper next season.

My thoughts are that Guy wouldn't let anyone down if he was.

That said, though, I believe next season will be more pressurized, in that fans expectations will want to achieve more than we managed this season, given the new stadium and hopefully bigger sponsorship and better attendances; of which we will have to wait and see if these things materialize.

So it would be a good thing if we can find a couple of experienced wily players, who can assist or be the leaders we need across the field.

What we don't need is a player/s who are past their sell by date and are coming to the end of their career in non league football.

We need players who can still cut it at a higher level. Getting better players will cost more, no doubt but if we want to progress to the higher echelons of the Premier division we need to do this.

What I'm trying to say, is that it isn't always down to one player to lead the team. It's those that support the captain that can make the difference as well.
