Sir Rebel1965
A link from the guardian about the town changing name from Slough to possibly Upton https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=12&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwj_j8afxv7LAhWH0RQKHTjYBaMQFghPMAs&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.theguardian.com%2Fuk-news%2F2016%2Fmar%2F04%2Fslough-debates-whether-to-change-its-name&usg=AFQjCNHEA6jBG5vpi60L7OIXgcsHpzXcJw I think this should work well as since Staines has changed its name to Staines-upon-Pants things are much more positive. Reading Rebel
The online poll of 42% of people backing the change are probably the same people who continually whinge and moan in the local papers when anything positive is trying to be done in Slough. David Carpenter
In a letter I sent to Sough Express which was not published I pointed out the following: Frederick Charsley attempted to change the name of Slough to Upton Royal in 1882. This was rejected by public vote and later under petition by Queen Victoria (who was presumably not amused). With regard to John Betjeman's "Come friendly atom bomb ...." this was allegorical. Betjeman travelled as a child with his mother from Paddington to Oxford and over the years watched Slough develop from a small market town into the modern industrial town. His remarks were however aimed at all such developments. He later stated his regret for this poem and his daughter consequently made a formal apology to the town. However I have great respect for Betjeman who was a renowned poet laureate and almost single handedly ensured the preservation of St Pancras Station. I agree with the previous posts regarding negative whingers. Long live the name Slough; long live Slough Town F.C. COYR!
A Rebel and a Saint
Looks like the council decided to discuss a motion relating to this at tonight's meeting, and passed the following motion unanimously... “This Council resolves that it is proud of its people, heritage and name. This Council thereby has no plans or aspirations to change the name of this great town, or hold any consultation on whether to change the name of Slough.”
