Bideford Away on Tuesday Night

One of the clubs who are using the money ball idea is fc midjytland who played man Utd recently and even though they won the home leg they got smashed in the return leg and dominated by the better team. It isn't working that well for the in the league as they sit 5th out of 12.

Rebel1965,

You are obviously old school and of the opinion that statistics in football (or maybe sports in general) are fairly irrelevant.

If so (and if you haven't already), it might be of interest to watch a film (or read the book) called Moneyball. The film is specifically about baseball and the use of statistics to maximise the performance of the team on a limited budget.

But apparently there are some professional football clubs who are attempting to refine and use the concept.

Curtis I do look at statistics, but only the valid ones based on fact, rather than those based on loose and vaguely linked coincidence.

Midjytland annual playing budget £7m, Man Utd £453m..... hardly a fair contest, and surprising they managed to get that far in the Europa cup let alone win the first leg.

You are forgetting the great equaliser, Man Utd have Van Gaal as manager :P

compare Midtjylland to the rest of their league and they have one of the biggest budgets and the best youth academy and still sit 5th out of 12.

Statistics can be good to help find your strengths and weaknesses but the definitely cannot tell you how to fix or improve them, only experience can do that !!!

Only the players can (ultimately) help a club improve as they are the only ones on the pitch.

You can statisize to death

You can train the players so they are near perfect

You can train them specifically on dead ball situations

You can ask players to man mark, or zone mark

You can tell them to play the ball, out the back or get it up as quick as possible.

You can change tactics during the match.

You can change players and change player positions, and formations

It is still only the players that are actually out there doing the business, be it to how the managers what, or not.

Now that's a stat to work out, how many times in a match does a player do exactly what he was asked to do, and visa versa.

Even then, the numbers could be looked at in a numerous number of ways, and multiple conclusions reached, all from the same set of base numbers..

Does anyone really think, when you look at the current Slough squad that we should be candidates for the play offs?

For us to be up there challenging we need 5 decent Conference South/top Southern-Ryman-Northern Premier players to do that in my opinion.

October 2015 has been our most successful month by far, which included Stonehouse, Strutton, Mpi, Benjamin and Sear, all players that when fully fit  are a handful and are quality.

Now that is no coincidence.

For once I'm in agreement with Rebel1965, the most important statistic of them all, is scoring more goals than the opposition for victory in a match.

Assume you mean for next season?

If so, of course we will have some different players in our squad for next season and hopefully they will be of the right quality to push us into play-off contention.

One things for certain our turnover of players will have be a lot smaller next season to make a serious challenge.

Obviously if you score more goals than the opposition you will win a match.

In the real world you cannot expect to be a team in contention for the play-offs or to win the league if you keep shipping so many goals and keep hoping that your strikers bale you out and outscore the opposition. As we all know most successful teams build from the back and have the right balance between being solid at the back and being good going forward.

What I forgot to put in was that for 80-90% of the time, the players do exactly what they have been told to do, it's that 10-20% of the time that they don't that causes problems for EVERY team out there from Leicester (Top of the pile) to the Sunday teams
