The Darkness have emerged as favourites for this year's Christmas Number One, dotmusic can confirm.

The pomp-rock superheroes have now overtaken the 'Pop Idol' collective as favourites for the coveted festive top slot with 'Christmas Time (Don't Let The Bells End)'.

Ladbrokes quote The Darkness as 8-11 favourites for Number One, whilst Pop Idol 12's 'Happy Xmas (War Is Over)' currently stands at 7-2 with Ladbrokes.

A spokesman for William Hill commented: "Nobody seems interested in backing the Pop Idol 12 - we didn't take a single bet on them yesterday.

"If it carries on like this it will be a one-horse race by the weekend."

'Mad World', the Michael Andrews reworking of the Tears For Fears original, taken from the movie 'Donnie Darko', is third favourite with Ladbrokes at 2-1.
