Ed Smith

Recommended Posts

Although Ed Smith has had a season blighted by injury and as a consequence has not been the same player of previous seasons I must say his departure has left me a bit gobsmacked.

Having said that it sounds like the decision was not all to do with his injuries or his performances on the pitch.

I'd would like to thank Ed for his goals and performances in a Rebels shirt and wish him all the best for the future.

Ed has been excellent for Slough and I'm sure would be even higher up the scoring list if he hadn't been injured so much over rhe past 2 seasons. Shame to see him go as he has been a good player for the team, but to me this is probably just 6 weeks sooner than it would have happened as his performances were never going to get him into the squad for next season IMO.

Great guy and always gave 100%, will go down as a star for us, and hope if he goes to another side, he can get his fitness back and achieve as much as possible.

I spoke to Ed a couple of weeks ago about next season as I know that he hates playing on 3G as it aggrievates his back and hamstrings, he said he was unsure if he could play a full season given this and his injury history. If he wasn't coming back then cutting him now would free money up for next season. Just my opinion

IMO I don't think his performances this season, due to recurring injuries, would have been a factor in him getting into next seasons squad. A summer of recuperation and a successful pre-season would probably have been enough to merit a place in next seasons squad.

Certainly didn't see it coming but if it's true that he wasn't keen or prepared to play on the 3G next season plus his injury record you can see maybe why both parties have come to this decision. Obviously on the other hand he'll be a massive loss and has been a great player for us but I'm certain Neil and Jon have a more than capable replacement in their minds.

Gutted. Our best goal threat since he joined the club. If it was the managers decision I feel it is a poor poor one. I for one have always been a huge fan and you will be missed. A true legend of the club.

The thing is Marcus, you can't say it's a poor decision until you are aware of all the facts.

I'll be very surprised if playing on a 3G surface was a major factor in ED leaving otherwise I think we would have been told.

149 appearances with 95 goals, gives a goal rate of 63.7% = exceptional!

Eddies contribution will be badly missed as with Charlie's recent departure there is now no height up front and this puts us at a massive disadvantage against big defences as Putman can't head and is scared to challenge, whilst Barney is too short.

Eddie Smith is a Slough Town legend and a fans favourite.

Maybe our managers are confident they can replace him but goal scorers like Ed Smith don't come along very often and as we know they usually don't come cheap.

Best wishes to Ed Smith , shame it had to end this way, as for several seasons he's been our star player.

His goal scoring record for the club will always be there for all to see.

Good luck for whatever he does next, Slough's loss will be some other team's gain.

I doubt we'd let Ed leave if there wasn't a suitable replacement do you not think? No one can doubt his excellent scoring record and of course whoever replaces him will have a task on his hands but as its been said we don't know the full facts of the parting.

Maybe something to do with this:-

Had a call from Eddie at 4.30pm who was on his way to hospital following a sudden family illness. He will try to get there for 2nd half but no guarantee.

Thanks Ed for all the goals, passion and entertainment over the past few seasons.

From the club statement:

"Ed would be the first to admit that this has not been his best season on the pitch" - that is with only 8 goals from the last 12 games - 66.6% which is higher than his overall average whilst at the club.

"The club will not be making any further comment" - good to keep the fans onside!!!

If this is money saving, with Smith on a contract, will other contract players be dropped?
