HORNCHURCH 1 SUDBURY 1 Sudbury had the rain and the wind in their favour in the first half, and Hornchurch had to defend for lengthy periods. George Purcell twice had scoring opportunities early on, putting his first shot wide, and then being denied by a good save from visiting keeper Marcus Garnham. Much of the play was at the Hornchurch end, where Jordan Blackwell sent a shot across the face of the goal, and a Luke Callender shot was deflected over the bar. Callender then hooked the ball wide from the resulting corner. Tambeson Eyong moved onto a good cross from Alex Bentley, and his shot was turned away for a corner. Joey May sent the ball over and Elliot Styles headed over. A dangerous cross from Bentley on the left reached Eyong at the far post, but his shot was blocked on the line, and when Eyong sent a good ball into the middle, Kieron St Aimie’s shot was deflected for a corner. St Aimie again went close when his shot was cleared off the line, but St Aimie then had to be substituted, David Knight coming on with three minutes left in the first half. In stoppage time Sam Mott made an excellent diving save to keep out a free kick from Luke Callender. Hornchurch had the better of the play in the second half. Only a last ditch tackle stopped Purcell, and keeper Garnham had to rush out of his goal to clear from Knight. Sudbury looked dangerous when they broke forward, and Craig Parker headed wide of an open goal. Purcell was brought down by James Baker, who was booked along with Purcell, but the free kick was cleared. Craig Parker opened the scoring for Sudbury when he found himself unmarked at the far post, but Sudbury then had to withstand a constant onslaught from Hornchurch, with Eyong prominent in many of the moves. Eyong was fouled by Sam Clarke, who was booked, and Knight headed the free kick against the post. Hornchurch drew level when David Knight headed home from an Eyong centre, and the scene was set for a lengthy siege on the visiting goal. Knight and Purcell combined to set up Bentley but Garnham saved well, turning the shot around d the post. Garnham was very fortunate not to receive a red card when he handled the ball outside the area, the referee instead allowing play to continue. Eyong went close after good work by Knight, and Garnham turned a Knight shot around the post as Sudbury defended desperately as Hornchurch swarmed forward. Knight found himself clear through the middle but the ball bobbled and he was crowded out as defenders rushed back to cover, and in stoppage time Junior Luke moved in from the left, and Garnham again saved well to earn his side a fortunate point.
