v Kettering

Recommended Posts

Having just seen the video I think this one goes into the "interpretation of the law" category.

The laws state a player is offside when the player in the "offside" position is:

  • Interfering with play
  • Interfering with an opponent
  • gaining an advantage by being in that position

“interfering with play” means playing or touching the ball passed or touched by a team-mate

“interfering with an opponent” means preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of vision or challenging an opponent for the ball

“gaining an advantage by being in that position” means playing a ball

 - that rebounds or is deflected to him off the goalpost, crossbar or an opponent having been in an offside position

 - that rebounds, is deflected or is played to him from a deliberate save by an opponent having been in an offside position

Barney was not playing the ball and was not obstructing the goal keepers view, however, you could argue he was preventing the goal keeper from playing the ball but it is debatable.

In my opinion he is not offside as the goal keeper did not even try to make a save so therefor whether Barney was in a position to stop him making a save is irrelevant.

I understand why the officials have given the offside and they don't have the luxury of seeing the replay.

Just had another look at the video and Scott Harris was also caught offside by the Kettering defence moving quickly upfield. The goalkeeper was unsighted so would have not seen the direction Lewis' shot was taking. I could not see at the time standing behind the goal what the situation was. It is a difficult  to interpret the "interfering with play" clause but my personal opinion is that in this case the officials decision was correct. Disappointing of course.

Dave, you mean Warren Harris and from the video it cannot be seen if he is offside as there are players that possibly look level with him from the video angle.

Lee Barney is to the right of the keeper and there are a ruck of players in front obstructing the keepers view.

IMO Lee wasn't obstructing the keepers view and it's very likely because the ball came through a ruck of players that he wouldn't have saved the shot.

Having said that you can have some sympathy with the lino's decision from the view he had looking along the line and seeing Lee very near the keepers view line but for me the decision is very debatable.

I think any mention off the play-offs has mainly been newspaper talk.

Gurkan does get minutes at other clubs but certainly agree that at some stage this season he deserves a to get a run in the team. Now Rummy is injured perhaps he might get his chance.

When looking ahead to next season IMO I would only include one player from our current defence as a bang on certainty to play week in week out [Guy Hollis]. The three other players look excellent fringe first 11/ squad players but not the necessarily regular starters to me.

I would retain the services of Sean Fraser, Jhai Dhillon  and Dan Hicks but I would bring in players to compete for their places or to replace them.

With all three of them, I view them as players that can adapt and play in other positions, than what they are currently played at. So they are more than useful to keep.

With the goals conceded column looking so bad it is obvious to me that a rebuild at the back will be necessary, especially if we are serious about getting in the play offs next season.

Mark Scott looks good enough to retain his position between the posts.

Our goals conceded column doesn't look very healthy and competition for places in our defence is non existent at the moment, although it looks as if we are trying to get some players in.

I wouldn't rule any one in or out for next season but starting tomorrow the players need to step up to the plate and show our managers that they are winners and have the character and desire to be part of our squad for next season.
