Concord Rangers have an intriguing tie whoever the opponents are , for Stone Dominoes play Sheffield tomorrow night, weather permitting and, should Sheffield win it then Concord will be playing the oldest team in the World - that'll create some column inches amopngst the ESL scribes ! - but, we await the result at Stone , first.

I fancy a tie with Chertsey but We have to beat Torrington first and they will equally fancy a match against Chertsey Town.

If every man in our defence does his duty we will beat the Torquay rejects (sorry Torrington) but it has got to be a better performance than against Bedfont or Burnham if we are to have a realistic chance of progressing.

Players - Take a leaf out of the England Rugby teams book and don't get the ar*e with poor quality decisions from the officials. No point - Let the fans do it for you. That way we keep 11 players on the pitch and our management team in the dugout for 90 minutes and stand a chance of winning. Come on Town we can win this and Torrington will start to be getting tired from all this travelling just before Christmas with all their family pressures nagging away at them!

Take heart lads!

If Sheffield are the oldest team in the world how long were they playing 'internal' friendlies for? When did the second oldest team in the world pop up?

You are probably correct about playing frendlies internally because there were something like 15 clubs in sheffield playing each other at the time.

The introduction to "Football's strangest matches" explains.

"In the beginning they were all strange games. When the first official club - Sheffield in 1857 - was formed, there were no other teams to play against. So the bachelors played the married men - until a nearby garrison put up a challenge. And one early Sheffield rule stipulated that players must hold half-crown [12.5p] coins while they played - to prevent pushing with the open hand."

So now you know.

Wow an educational thread!

Married versus unmarried. Did they say who won and if they had any thought as to why? Maybe we should as Knock Knock or Uncle Albert?
