George Purcell had a shot blocked on five minutes and a long throw from Junior Luke was headed wide. Hornchurch won several corners, but visiting goalkeeper James May did not have to make a save, as Hornchurch failed to get a shot on target. A good ball from David Knight found Ricky Freeman, signed on Thursday from Phoenix Sports, but his shot was also wide. Cheshunt took the lead with their first attacking move of the match, when Tom Bruno sent a hopeful centre into the middle. Sam Mott dropped the ball and Jason Hallett reacted quickly to place it firmly into the net. Cheshunt defended for the remainder of the half, and the closest Hornchurch came was when Freeman created an opening for Knight, but his shot was comfortably saved by May. Shortly before the interval Cheshunt went close when they broke out of defence and Tom Fletcher’s shot from the left drifted wide. Dave Collis replaced Elliot Styles for the second half, and Leon McKenzie came on for Freeman, as Cheshunt, with the wind now behind them, came more into the match as an attacking force. Hornchurch continued to have the territorial edge, but did not trouble keeper May, although a Purcell cross caused some confusion in the Cheshunt defence before being turned away for a corner. At the other end Mott saved a long range shot from Luke Illsley, and a minute later a McKenzie cross was scrambled away for a corner. Purcell made a run in from the wing and his shot hit the side netting, and Cheshunt then went further ahead when Jason Hallett was left with far too much room when he calmly converted a cross from the right wing. Josh Cooper almost made it three with a long range wind-assisted shot, which Mott tipped over the bar. Purcell went close with a shot from the left, and almost on time Dave Collis headed over from close range, but Cheshunt was otherwise rarely in danger of losing their advantage.
