Gibbs/Reporter/Referee

I was beginning to feel a bit of sympathy for Gibbs after reading the letter slaughtering him in the Reporter, and his apologies. However after reading his way over the top criticism of the referee, and saying the red card decision was appalling all that sympathy went out of the window. Grow up Mr. Gibbs and take a leaf out of Rugbys book.

Yes - next time he could stamp on the player's head and gouge his eyes out.

Rugby.....yawn.

Isn't it about time everybody got off the rugby bandwagon?
We won the rugby world cup - big deal.
A sport that most people didn't give two monkeys about until we looked like we could win something!

Someone made a good point during the World Cup that rugby players respect the ref because the ref treats them as equals and doesn't talk to them like schoolchildren and dismiss them. OK, players have got to learn it works both ways and treat referees with respect, but too many football refs treat players as children and just wave away players who might have genuine complaints.

If Gibbs thought the ref's decision appalling, I feel he has the right to say so in a newspaper interview. I thought while maybe not appalling, the ref's decision was certainly over-the-top, but let's face it - he didn't actually hurt the bloke. McKimm was kicked and nothing happened to the offender. It's the laws that are the problem - in cleaning up the game, the authorities have gone too far. Sending someone off for petulance, or a handbags argument with an opponent, or for a tackle that's slightly late with no intent, or for that handball that Perkins did in a game a few months back that was harming nobody... in rugby you could do all that, then stick your fingers in someone's eyes and punch their kidneys... and the ref would have a quiet word or sinbin you.

Surely a much better option than some primadonna with a FIFA rulebook booking people for the odd act of petulance or a foul that's not actually that bad.

Absolutely agree, Darren.

The rugby team, when I was a student, was notorious for 5 things:

1. Getting dangerously drunk;

2. Acquiring this status by standing on toppling tables, sinking whole pints of the foulest beer imaginable, whilst their "colleagues" looked on singing something about "zumba" & "zulu warriors."

3. Following this up, by removing all their clothes;

4. Finishing with an immensely tasteful display, wherein they simulated "acts of gross public indecency" with one another;

5. For all the above, never being able to have their end of season "celebration" in the same place 2 years running.

Sport of gentlemen? You bet your ass, boy! (Though personally, I wouldn't let them within striking distance of mine.)

Paul Gibbs is being subjected to disgusting over-the-top critism. I saw the replay, he did lose his rag, but doesnt everyone? Surely the manner that he contested his sending-off, and the way he argued with the Notts bench shows some sort of desire? He wanted to play, he wants to play, hes apologized, there's no need to hold it out, and hes a great lpayer! Just let it go, the cup dream is over, and he can help maintain our conference status!!!

Well said KShep I do agree that he showed how much he wanted to play, by contesting his sending off. I know players shouldn't argue, but in the heat of the moment if they sincerely feel they have been hard done by, then human nature being what it is??? In actual fact Paul probably punished himself more by being sent off than any COMMENT in the local press could do. I notice his spectacular goal line clearance in the first half wasn't mentioned.
