Dereham, forced to defend for long periods, won a corner when Witherspoon did well to tackle Ryan Crisp, but the ball sailed harmlessly across the goal. Visiting keeper Will Viner made an excellent save to deny Purcell from a Joey May free kick, and Viner was in action again to catch May’s dangerously inswinging corner. Purcell again hit a free kick, again conceded by Frary, into the wall, and Purcell then turned sharply to hit a shot narrowly wide from a Witherspoon pass. And it was Purcell once again, this time shooting wide from a Nathan Cooper touch. A minute before half time Dereham managed their only goal attempt of the first half, when Witherspoon was penalised and Luke Tuttle’s free kick came back off the wall. Hornchurch came out strongly in the second half, and almost went ahead when a May corner was headed goalwards by Dave Collis, the ball being cleared off the line, and back to Tobi Joseph, who directed his shot a fraction too high and over the bar. Dereham threatened shortly afterwards, when Sam Mott, a spectator for long periods, made two excellent saves from Tuttle in the space of thirty seconds, and Hornchurch then went up field, and David Knight played a through pass to Tobi Joseph, who ran forward and glided the ball home. Three minutes later it was Knight again who made the opening, when he gained possession from an Elliot Styles clearance, and his cross found Tobi Joseph ideally placed in front of goal. Dereham made two substitutions and came more into the match, and Mott made two very good saves to keep the ball out of the home net. It was then the turn of Knight to hit a free kick hard into the defensive wall, this time following a foul by Tuttle, who became the fourth visiting player to go into the book, but Hornchurch were now in full command, and Dave Collis added a third goal from a Jed Chouman Pass, this shot going in via a post. It was then a question of keeping a clean sheet and although Dereham had one further opportunity, the three points were already secure.
