After a Joey May corner came to nothing, a long throw by Junior Luke was flicked on by Tobi Joseph to Dave Collis, and Steve Phillips held his shot. Harry Baker sent a shot wide, and, when George Purcell ran on to a long cross field pass from David Knight, his shot, from a narrow angle, went into the side netting. A Joey May free kick was deflected for a corner, which was cleared, and then came the only booking of the match, when Nathan Cooper was shown a yellow card for a mistimed tackle in midfield. And it was Cooper who cleared the resulting free kick after the ball had bobbled around close to the goalmouth. Hornchurch took the lead on 27 minutes when Junior Luke’s long throw was played back to him, and when Junior crossed the ball back into the middle David Knight fired home from the edge of the area. Cooper came up for a May corner and his header was saved by Phillips, who also saved well from Knight shortly afterwards, after a neat build up involving Joey May and Tobi Joseph. Hornchurch went further ahead five minutes into the second half. Jed Chouman’s throw was played out to George Purcell, thirty yards out, and close to the touchline, and we were treated to yet another Purcell special. Three minutes later, a Joey May corner reached Nathan Copper who calmly hit his shot through a packed defence and into the net for his first goal for his new club. We had only four minutes to wait for the next goal, and it was George Purcell once again, who took up the running from a long David Knight pass, and ran forward to slot past Phillips. Ricky Freeman pulled a goal back two minutes later, when he converted a cross from the right wing, and Sam Mott had to field a dangerous corner shortly afterwards as the home side tried to get back into the game. Phoenix then made a triple substitution and for a time had more of the attacking play, until Hornchurch regained their ascendency, when Knight went close with a good shot which Phillips did well to hold. And Phillips was again in action, after Baker had crossed to May, whose shot was tipped over for a corner. As the match entered the final ten minutes Hornchurch introduced Calvin Poku, Liam Burgess and Leon Smith. Smith came on when Phoenix were about to take a corner, and perhaps the defence was unsettled by the change, and when the ball came over Ricky Freeman scored from close range, his fifth goal against Hornchurch in two games. In stoppage time Joseph shot wide from a Purcell pass, and the match ended with the home side forcing two corners in succession.
