Season so far

Part of my degree many many years a go was to look at pure data and present it in at least ten different ways, proving that "A" was the best, the average, and the worst.

It was amazing at how easy it was to do that from the same set of raw data.

We also had to set up two sets of questions to ask the public. One would make them say that they loved product "A" and the other would make the same people say they hated product "A", all before they realised they had said it, purely down to how the preceding questions were phrased. The main question about product "A" remained the same for both.

It is suprisingly easy to take data and make it show exactly what you want, and what others want

Why don't we just use the 'clap-om-meter' like us oldies remember from Hughie Green's Opportunity Knocks tv programme.

Basically if an act was any good, the audience would applaud loudly and the clapommeter would reach the high points on the scale, if the act was rubbish it would be in the bottom scores, and if the act was mediocre it would hover around the mid points.

Of course the whole thing was rigged, just as statistics can be viewed whatever way, you yourself want to view it.

From my point of view, taking the season so far, the matches I've seen have been enjoyable ones, regardless of the results, which is the most important statistic of them all !

Currently on a score between 1 and 10, I would say we're hovering around the 7and a half, mark for entertaining football and between 6 to 7 on where we are in the table.

So it's certainly not the doom and gloom, some fans to want to portray.

Some valid factual statistics

Season 2014/2015 mean average points per game - 1.159 (44 games 51 points)

Season 2014/2015 start of season to end December mean average points per game - 1.458 (24 games 35 points)

Season 2014/2015 January to end of season mean average points per game - 0.8 (20 games 16 points)

Season 2015/2016 start of season to end December mean average points per game - 1.333 (27 games 36 points)

Extrapolating the current points per game for the rest of this season would give 61 points come the end of April 2016.

Variables noted are the number of games per the time periods, the difference in numbers of games to be played in the season (removal of Hereford 2014/15).

Interesting stats but the real outcome of the second half of last season shows just why this kind of extrapolation can be wildly inaccurate At the end of December last season (24 games 35 points 1.458) we were doing better than we currently are this season (27games 36points 1.333) but we collapsed in the second half of the season( 20games 16points 0.80 ) If we had extrapolated  last season using the end of December figures then the projection would have been very much better than the reality.

In the first 3 league matches of last season we had a win, draw and defeat... and 39 points from 27 matches (comparison 36 points from 27 matches). Which is maybe why to me it doesn't feel like we have progressed this season.

I suppose if we maintain similar results for the remainder of this season (rather than the collapse we saw in the second half of last season), then by the end of the season I might feel as though we have progressed.

Think Reading Rebel is right in that it takes time to build a team that is going to be 'challenging' for honours.

We made progress by getting up from the Central Division and staying up first season.

This season we have improved on the players we are attracting to the club but the managers have had a difficult time of it, having to mix and match a lot because of injuries and players who haven't made the grade for whatever reason.

So I think it's reasonable to have a bit of patience, as our team is far from settled and I can only envisage more up and down results to come.

Progress is any placing higher than last season. The higher the finish, the bigger progress we've made.

Unfortunately, a number of teams have played less games than us, so our position in the current table is a bit false and so it's anyone's guess what our 'Jeckyll and Hyde ' side will do for the rest of the season.

3 Spirit    Its remarkable how many of the teams chasing us have wasted games in hand in the last few weeks  maybe Lady Luck  is smiling on us a bit   Best example is St Neots  beaten at home again yesterday  At one time had six games in hand   all gone now and still well behind.

Especially as St Neots were one of the teams tipped to be challenging for the title.

However, Stratford, Cambridge and Chesham look more than likely to overtake Slough, given the amount of games in hand they have.

Also a lot of teams above us have more points than us, with games in hand, too, which isn't so good either.

Big spending St Neots.

I think it's one win in their last 9 games losing their last 3.

I just wonder how much longer they will give their manager. Lose their next game away to Frome and I think he could be gone.

St Neots have announced a meeting on the 15th Jan inviting all supporters to " discuss where we are going" Ive a feeling a lot of them wont require a meeting to have a good idea where that is On a more serious note there is a growing theory that players are deliberately under performing to drive out Batch.

As we are about two thirds of the way through the season it is worth looking at our position.

30 games and 42 points gives us a points per game ratio of exactly 1.4 points per game - a good solid number.

This should give us around 64 points come the end of the season, which should be mid table, well away from relegation, but not quiet in with a sniff of the play-offs.

It may be a little early to look at next season, but with the departure of Charlie Mpi, I would think the managers will be looking to develop the team for the next campaign.

It will be different next year being based in the town and playing on a 3G pitch, with hopefully an enlarged gate.

So rather than write off the next 16 games, I think players and managers should use these games to get the squad working to its best, and ensure we have a team that will be a threat to anyone next season.

I don't think our managers will even contemplate writing off this season just because we are almost safe from any threat of relegation.

I think our managers will be going flat out to get as many points on the board to finish the season on an upward curve.

At the same time they will have one eye on next season with the view to seeing what players they want keep from this seasons squad and what new players they want to bring in. I think they have already stated that they have been working on player recruitment even at this relatively early stage.

It's not the managers that will drop off the pace with regards to getting results but psychologically the players might when they think they're safe from relegation.

Hopefully Bakes and Unders will keep them focussed on the job in hand and get more out of the players than just scraping past the 45/48 point mark, as I would have thought the chance to be playing in a new stadium,on a better pitch and possibly in front of more fans for next season should be a great incentive.

Some players I expect have done enough to still be wanted next season but there's bound to be some that haven't !

Losing Charlie Mpi is a big loss, as so much of our attacking play happens off of him. Be interesting to see if we look for a similar sort of replacement ie someone with pace, or whether we change our style of play slightly for the rest of the games coming up.
