Yes We are seventh in the table tonight just 2 places off the playoffs and at last we don't have a negative goal difference 27 for 27 against Really brings home the main reason for our earlier poor showing you have to go right down to 20th place to find a club that has conceded more Great that that issue has been addressed.

epic That's exactly the point I am making We have never had a problem with our attack from day one Our problems all season have been with poor defensive displays which are now being addressed. Its as Ive said before don't concede and you cant lose no matter how many you score you are guaranteed nothing.

Irishadrian, you are partly right about poor defensive displays but I don't accept that this is primarily down to the defence.

For me, it's always been about getting the centre of midfield right and then tweaking the defence/strike force. Now we've addressed these issues the positive results have arrived. Hurrah !

7th.... but if the league was worked on average points per game (to account for games in hand), then we would probably be 14th.

To get a play-off place you need an average of around 1.75 points per match or 80 at the end of the season, if we have 35 points at the halfway stage we could possibly mount a challenge.

I think a discussion on play-offs/promotion occurred on here at a similar time last season, and some thought promotion would be detrimental to the Club.

Is this still the case?

I don't think the club as a whole is ready for the step up yet. A lot will depend on when we can move into the new ground and what revenues, if any, we are allowed to generate from the ground and associated facilities. Whilst at Beaconsfield, too much work would need to be done with the ground, more expenses incurred without any way of managing them.

I would suspect our playing budget would constitute for a middle third finish in the league and I expect that's where we will finish the season.

  • 3 weeks later...

With 21 league games played so far we have won 8 drawn 4 and lost 9, and have 28 points.

Last season after 21 league games we had won 8 drawn 6 and lost 7, with 30 points.... we had a bad run from January to April last season though with W4, D4, L12, so we could still see an improvement on last seasons 16th place finish.

If you compare against direct games that we played last year then we are in a better position points wise at present, however does not take into account games against the new teams having lost to Bedworth, Kings Lynn and Leamington away, losing to Stratford at home and drawing with Stratford away.

Frome (h) - draw last year and this season - even

Biggleswade (a) loss this year draw last year - 1

Histon (H) draw last year, win this year + 1

Hitchin (A) lost last year and this year + 1

Poole (H) lost last year and this year + 1

Chesham (A) drew last year and this one + 1

Cirencester (H) lost last year won this year + 4

Redditch home and away - lost all game + 4

Bideford (H) won last year and this year + 4

Dorchester (H) won last year and this year + 4

Histon (A) drew last year won this year + 6

Paulton (H) won last year and this year + 6

Cambridge (H) lost last year won this year + 9

Chippenham A) lost last year drew this year + 10

Dunstable (A) won last year and this year + 10

What a crap system of calculating performance - the reality is 2 points less than last season for the same number of games.

The mix of the league is different so you are not calculating consistently - you cannot compare last seasons performances to this as the teams that make up the league are different and the final positions are based total number of points after playing ALL the teams twice, not how well we did this year v last year team by team.
