vs Basingstoke

A much better performance when we had the ball, however, we let in a few soft goals.

Basingstokes first goal was an obvious offside. (With the new offside rules)

Second half we started slowly and the first goal conceded was similar to that of redditch on tuesday. We turned off when the red gave the foul and Basingstoke played quickly and caught us out. The third goal was McDonald not being strong enough and Mark Scott not coming out to claim the ball. Basingstokes fourth was one of those goals which can happen when you go all out attack.

We looked more composed when in possession and created several chances first half, Putman had their right back in his pocket and caused them problems.

We hit the bar a couple of times and if just one had gone in it would have been a different game completely, especially if McDonald's header from the corner had gone in just before half time.

Disappointing to go out in the cup but there were definitely some positives but also some things still to work on.

Also good to see Sears get nearly the full 90 mins.

In the "Looking ahead" for this game, Jon Underwood commented that he wouldn't call out positions or players so as not to have a negative effect on the team, we'll I'm afraid the time has come to start that process as we are not good enough and will get relegated unless some major changes to the squad happen.

Goalkeepers

Mark Scott - a top signing and keeping us competitive in quite a few games this season

Luke Williams - did well in his 3 games, and was sold down the river with the rubbish defence he had in front of him against Burnham.

Defence

Sean Fraser - is looking out classed by many attackers at the moment. Can't fault his work rate and effort however.

Guy Hollis - top defender and works as hard as anyone on the squad.

Gary Mcdonald - how this player is our captain and leader is beyond me. He is slower than any player in ours or pretty much any other team, he can't head a ball to save his life and when he does win the odd header he either scores in his own goal (like today) or misses a sitter (like today). Simply not good enough.

Jhai Dhillon - has been excellent in the first 2 games

Stuart Lake - only helping out and possibly the only player slower than Mcdonald in the world.

Dan Hicks - looks like a good signing.

Midfield

Warren Harris - clearly struggling with fitness but having to play most games. Hasn't scored or beaten a player since his return from injury.

Adam Martin - struggling to find the form of last season and is looking lost at the moment.

Adrian Sear - good player but can't stop getting injured.

Nathan Webb - see Adrian Sear

Jake Parsons - excellent before his injury, but can't even seem to run since his return.

Jamie Mcclurg - the worst of out midfielders. Can't pass anything but backwards, struggles to find a player in the same colour shirt than him and totally out of his depth in our league.

Forwards

Ed Smith - see Adrian Sear/Nathan Webb

Charlie Mpi - puts in so much effort game in game out and feel for him having to a with some of the players he is

Scott Harris - see Charlie Mpi

Lewis Putman - would like to see a bit more of him in the box and needs a goal to kick start his season.

All in all we have some decent players, we have some ok players and some terrible players that are totally out of their depth.

In the same interview I hope that Jon Underwood was being metophorical about the lack of "sad faces" at training as the performances recently, whilst ok in patches have just not been good enough and I would expect the players to show the same passion as the fans and care about how poor they have been thus far this season.

We need to strengthen our defence by removing at least Mcdonald from it and replacing him ASAP. We need to get in 3-4 better midfield players, some with more creativity and also some fitter players and we need to give our strikers more support with said creativity.

Time to stop the excuses, time to stop pretending that we are almost there with the team. It's time to make the required changes ASAP and those changes require identifying the 5-6 players that are just totally out of their depth and making the required replacements to the squad. You can't continue losing to sides like Burnham and Bedworth and expect everything to be rosy in the garden.

The time to act is now, before we fall further down the league and are cut adrift and start next season in our shiny new stadium and the Central Division.

I felt so disappointed walking out of the ground this afternoon. That was a massive missed opportunity and I do feel sorry for the team and managers at the moment. However we are making too many individual mistakes at the moment and these need to be rooted out if we are to turn it around. I would be surprised if we didn't see some ins and outs soon, though not wholesale changes.

Aside from giving away cheap goals, we are not creating enough. Central midfield is the obvious problem area for me at the moment. Too many players off form, coming back from injury or struggling at this level.

Very disappointing  First time this season Basingstoke have been allowed 4 goals  usually its 1 or 0  Easy to see why they are doing so badly I am reminded of W.B.Yeats famous quote "Things fall apart when the centre cannot hold" Also we could really have used the four and a half grand  we failed to get today but there is still the Trophy but with only 20% ish of our league  program played  there is plenty of time to turn things round but the time for talking is just about over imo

Actually thought it was areal improvement on our display last Tuesday, as the boys battled well................unfortunately the front two/three are not firing at present and even a couple of lucky goals or deflections might lift confidence, I felt we were worth a draw on possession and chances and at no time were we looking outplayed. Three defensive errors cost us against a hungry number 10 but our goals and the ones that hit the woodwork showed what should have been especially as we seem short of luck at present.

Yes, some of the team may not be as good as we would like but with the commitment of today being repeated in the next half dozen games , improvement in results should follow so as to lift us 4/5 places in the table towards respectability.

For the second game in a row Dhillon was our best player, and his attacking forays down the left bode well for the future as his knowledge of the strikers needs increases.

So, sad to be out of this tournament , but much still to play for................attitude today good and this will help greatly.
