Munchkin
Well done Hoddesdon, hope you get a good tie in the next round. Really happy both our sides won today. Solid win for the firsts, although we didn't have to be at our best. Chuffed for the Reserves to get their first win in the league. They've been unlucky in some close games and needed that today. BigDogCol
Why are we nearly into October and still assessing referees? I'd love to see the stats for assessed vs non assessed games and the amount of cards produced. Occurs to me that putting an assessor in the ground just results in far too many stoppages and bookings. Yesterday wasn't a dirty game by any stretch yet produced 13 yellows and a red. Can't we just get a pool of approved SSML officials and stick to it rather than giving these amateur armchair nazis some limelight every year before demoting them the the Essex Senior league . . . Neutral
Just because a game isn't 'dirty' doesn't mean it can't produce a number of yellow cards
Backroom1
The real question is actually, why are referees told when they are being assessed? Why don't assessors just turn up last minute and watch the game? That way, the referee conducts the game as he would normally.

Can't we just get a pool of approved SSML officials and stick to it rather than giving these amateur armchair nazis some limelight every year before demoting them the the Essex Senior league . . . Referees have to have a minimum of 5 assessments, I believe, each season (a referees season being 1st March to 28th (29th) February - This allowing the FA time to work out referee promotion and relegations) so with about 110 referees at Level 4 that is 550 games as a minimum that have to be covered. Spartan Premier games = 462 a season Essex Senior games = 420 a season Until about 10 years ago, referees promotions were decided on club marks. There are obviously flaws in this system, and that is why the 50% assessment rule came into being. I guess the problem is that assessors generally don't travel too far so if an assessor lives near your club then your games will get assessed more often The real question is actually, why are referees told when they are being assessed? Why don't assessors just turn up last minute and watch the game? That way, the referee conducts the game as he would normally. Of course, that would then mean that the referees would have to referee every game believing they were being assessed and therefore, if what people say on here is the norm when referees are assessed, every game would end up with plenty of cautions and sending offs. I agree with Jonno that the 'N' word is entirely inappropriate. And presumably what you want is referees to use 'common sense' and when they do, you'll be complaining about 'lack of consistency' because a HTFC player got booked for 'X' one week and an opponent did not the previous or following week!! Assessors are (theoretically) there to give consistency - but it doesn't always follow....
BigDogCol
Ok, point taken but seen too many refereeing displays already this season that are excessively fussy because they're being assessed and know it. Yesterday's game was competitive and played in good spirit yet the ref saw fit to book 5 Biggleswade players and 5 of Hertford's. It's not a Hertford Town bias as I don't want ANY game spoiled by silly decisions and a lack of common sense. No-one wins as players sit out suspensions, clubs get fined and fans aren't getting full value. We shouldn't be talking about officials so much and concentrating on great grassroots footie . . . petethegreek
As explained by Enfield Til It Died, there are over one hundred Level 4 Referees who need a minimum number of assessments. This is the same as last season when the Essex Spartan Pool was formed.Definitely noted more Assessors since the start of the marking season.Eight assessments for me so far.
