HORNCHURCH  1 MALDON & TIPTREE  3

On the last day of summer, heavy rain overnight meant that an early pitch inspection was needed. The rain stopped and the match went ahead. Hornchurch had an early scare when Femi Akinwande broke clear, and Junior Luke came across to get in an excellent tackle to prevent what seemed a certain goal.

Billy Coyne was ideally place to hook the ball clear when Darren Mills moved on to a cross from the right wing, and took the ball past Sam Mott, and the visitors had a let-off when Abs Thompson moved rapidly down the right, and his cross was deflected past the post for a corner.

Maldon took the lead when a long ball was played upfield and Mills touch on to Femi Akinwande who neatly placed the ball wide of Mott and into the net.

The second goal soon followed. Mott could not hold a shot from Darren McQueen, and Darren Mills reacted first to score.

Hornchurch came back and Tobi Joseph went close from a Thompson cross. Hornchurch defended two corners as Maldon continued to come forward, and at the other end a Joey May free kick was comfortably fielded by Danny Sambridge, who was again in action on 37 minutes, with a save that swung the match firmly in Maldon’s favour. Thompson created the opening, and Sambridge made a remarkable save from Tobi Joseph. The ball was promptly played upfield, where Darren McQueen crossed into the middle and David Segura made it three nil.

Sambridge made two good saves in the final few minutes of the half, firstly from a Billy Coyne free kick, and then from a hard shot by Harry Baker, whilst Tyler Brampton was perhaps fortunate to escape with only a yellow card after a badly mistimed challenge which, had it connected with the Hornchurch player, would surely have resulted in a straight red.

Dave Collis replaced Baker at half time and Hornchurch took control in the second half, forcing Maldon to defend for long spells. Jed Chouman came on for Abs Thompson and Tobi Joseph moved out to the left.

Nathan Cooper moved up for a free kick but his header was wide of the post, and a Tobi Joseph header from a free kick was cleared off the line, and a David Knight shot met the same fate as Maldon pulled everyone back in defence.

Hornchurch pulled a goal back after a spell of intense pressure. Billy Coyne’s long throw was headed on by Dave Collis, and David Knight finished off from close range.

Mott made a good save from a Maldon break, but most of the action took place at the Maldon end of the pitch, where a Joseph shot was cleared off the line, and yet another goalline clearance shortly after Calvin Poku had replaced Billy Coyne, when the ball bobbled around in the goal mouth but no one could force it over the line.

The final chance fell to Jed Chouman only for his header to beat the defence but drop over the bar.

Three points lost, with the turning point being the excellent save by Sambridge from Joseph, followed just ten seconds later with Maldon’s third goal, when a potential two one scoreline instead became three nil.
