David Knight provided a good pass to Calvin Poku, whose shot was well saved by home Jayden Purdue in the home goal. The ball ran out to David Knight who fired hard into the roof of the net from a narrow angle. Abbey came back strongly, with Ellis Lentell causing problems on the right, and Callum Chafer did well to save from a Lentell volley from outside the area. Hornchurch went close on three occasions in quick succession Harry Baker fired over from long range and Leon Smith did likewise shortly afterwards. Abbey drew level on 29 minutes when Christian Assombalonga was ideally placed to slot home a cross from the right wing. A dangerous cross from Harry Baker was deflected for a corner, whilst at the other end Chafer saved well from Lentell after Abbey had broken quickly upfield. Shortly before half time Elliot Styles did well to clear from Assombalonga. Abs Thompson, for Danny Johnson, and George Purcell, for David Knight, both came on for the second half, and after Thompson had twice threatened down the right, Abbey came back when a long ball found Ryan Flack out on the left wing, and Assombalonga went close from the centre. Hornchurch took control for long spells, though the closest they came to scoring was a long range shot from Purcell, which was saved by Purdue, and a header from Styles from a long Junior Luke throw, which dropped just over the bar. There were six minutes of stoppage time, largely due to an injury to Adeyinkia Cole, and both teams went close in this period, but, seemingly inevitably, the match went to penalties. Hornchurch went first – George Purcell’s shot was saved by Purdue. Piers Wixon, a very late substitution, scored for Abbey – 0-1 Harry Baker went next and made no mistake. Ryan Flack netted for Abbey – 1-2 Elliot Styles stepped up and Purdue easily saved his weak shot. Theo Jones went next and Callum Chafer made a fine diving save. Still 1-2 Dave Collis took the best penalty of the night to send Purdue the wrong way. Ellis Lentell did likewise with Abbey’s penalty – 2-3 Joey May levelled the scores with a well struck shot. And then a surprise – it was home keeper Jayden Purdue who took what proved to be the deciding kick, and he made no mistake.
