Within a minute George Purcell left Lee Chaffey in his wake, rounded keeper Zac Barrett, but then directed his shot over the bar from a narrow angle. Hornchurch took the lead on eight minutes following good work by Abs Thompson and David Knight, which resulted in a corner. This was headed out for a second corner, and Joey May sent the ball over into the packed goalmouth, where Tobi Joseph directed his header over Barrett and under the bar. On 23 minutes the visitors drew level. An Andrew Phillips free kick was not cleared, and Joey May lost the ball, allowing Danny Kelly to fire home from outside the area. Sam Mott fielded a City corner, before a May free kick found Thompson, whose shot was blocked. Another free kick resulted and Gorge Purcell hit his shot around the wall but also wide of the post. Hornchurch had a further chance when Junior Luke’s long throw found Tobi Joseph, whose header almost beat Barrett, who tipped the goal bound header over the bar. As half time approached Purcell forced a good save from Barrett. Hornchurch started the second half with an attacking move on the right, and David Knight sent the ball into the middle where it landed on the roof of the net. City came back strongly and Sam Mott saved well from a City free kick, and Danny Johnson got in a timely tackle to prevent another scoring opportunity. Luke picked out Harry Baker, whose dangerous cross from the left was deflected away for a corner. Hornchurch pressed forward, and Thompson went down under a heavy challenge which could easily have resulted in a penalty. But when George Purcell was fouled, there was no hesitation on the part of referee Matt Corlett who immediately pointed to the spot, and Purcell stepped up to confidently hammer home what proved to be the decisive goal. Barrett held on to a Knight cross, but City came forward again, and Luke tackled well as Andrew Phillips raced clear. Mott was in action to rise well to hold an inswinging corner, and Luke then prevented Michael Malcolm from breaking through as he cut in from the wing. Leon Smith, on for Thompson, got in two well timed headed clearances, and Johnson made a neat interception as the visitors swarmed forward. As the match moved into the final few minutes, it was Hornchurch who began to again take control and retaining possession for long periods, and they were not troubled during the four minutes of stoppage time.
