HORNCHURCH  6  REDBRIDGE  0

Hornchurch fielded the same starting line up as on Friday at Aveley, whilst Tom Pennells returned to the squad following his suspension.

The big question was whether Hornchurch could end their home goal drought, and with the first half goalless and moving into stoppage time we were beginning to wonder if we should play all our matches away from home.

Plenty of chances, but no reward. Abs Thompson created havoc on the right wing, but his crosses into the middle came to nothing as a packed defence got in the way time after time. And Redbridge could have taken the lead, had not Sam Mott reacted quickly to keep out a hard volley from outside the area. Redbridge had two further scoring chances in what was otherwise a one-sided first half – one was headed over the bar by James Ogunleye, who had come up for a corner, and the other came when Sam Mott could not hold on to a difficult cross from the right. Billy Drake laid the loose ball back and the follow up shot went over the bar.

At the windmill end, visiting goalkeeper Mark Avery had a lot to do, and when George Purcell crossed from the left, it was Avery who saved brilliantly from David Knight’s close range shot.

Purcell fired wide from a Thompson cross, Avery saved well from David Knight after George Purcell had made the opening, and Purcell sent a hard drive over the bar when he got onto the end of a Junior Luke long throw.

As the first half moved into stoppage time it looked as though the home goal drought was going to continue – until Joey May took a hand, and his shot from the left eluded a mass of defenders and ended up, possibly via a deflection, in the far corner of the net.

The second half saw the visitors having no other choice than to concentrate on defence as Hornchurch swarmed forward. Purcell set the scene with a hard drive which went wide, and Knight then went close from a Purcell cross.

An overworked Avery saved well from Purcell, and then came a near miss at the other end, when Vinny Murphy’s free kick came back off the post and the rebound was booted high over bar.

The bulk of the action was at the Redbridge end, where Avery saved well from Luke, and Bostry Bansende was booked for a mistimed tackle. May took the free kick and found Leon Smith, whose header was saved in style by Avery.

Tom Pennells replaced Junior Luke, and three minutes later Hornchurch increased their lead. Knight won the ball in midfield, and his long pass through the middle found George Purcell who ran on to glide the ball past Avery.

Knight hooked the ball over the bar from a Billy Coyne throw, and when Thompson played the ball back to Purcell, his cross found Knight, whose shot was tipped over the bar. Joey May sent the corner across, and Leon Smith headed over.

The third goal arrived when Thompson and Knight combined to set up Tobi Joseph, who made no mistake with his shot.

Calvin Poku replaced Purcell, and less then a minute later it was Poku who finished off a good cross from Tom Pennells for the fourth goal.

David Knight got onto the score sheet two minutes from time, when he ran on to a cross, and, as Avery came out to narrow the angle, Knight calmly slotted the ball into the net.

In stoppage time David Knight made it six nil when he followed up after Avery had saved well from Poku.

Is the home goal drought over? We hope so. And the individual tally is now Knight nine, Purcell nine, Joseph six and Poku six.
