And after having 75 percent of the territorial play, it was Sam Mott who came to the rescue with three excellent saves to prevent goals from visiting breakaways. Hornchurch dominated the first half, and could have gone ahead when David Knight sent Abs Thompson away on the right. Abs cut inside and sent a low cross into the goalmouth, where Tobi Joseph miskicked in front of goal. Tom Ranger made a good run on the left for the visitors and was tackled by Thompson, who conceded a corner. James Pugsley took the kick and the ball was comfortably cleared. Hornchurch came forward again and a Junior Luke throw found Joseph, but a defender blocked his shot. Bradley Vaughan was booked for a bad challenge on David Knight. Billy Coyne took the free kick, but the ball went wide of the goal. Luke and Thompson combined well to send the ball over to Joseph, who headed wide. Sam Mott, a spectator for long periods, was called into action, saving well from Jay Nash, and the resulting corner, taken by Ranger, was played short and comfortably cleared. Elliot Styles needed a long spell of attention after a challenge by Stuart Hepburn and after trying to continue for a few minutes, was replaced by Leon Smith. George Purcell made a good run only for his hard shot from outside the area to go the wrong side of the post. Adam Seal in the visiting goal, despite the pressure, was not called upon to make a save until shortly before half time, when he saved well from Purcell, who had been ideally placed to run on to a long throw from Billy Coyne. Hornchurch went close a minute after the interval when a long Junior Luke throw fell to Purcell, but his shot went over the bar. And when Danny Johnson sent Purcell away on the left, the centre was a fraction too high for Joseph to reach as the ball went invitingly across the face of the goal. Another long throw from Luke was turned out for a corner. May took the kick and the ball was played out to Thompson on the right wing. Abs sent the ball back into the middle and Knight’s shot came back off the bar. Vaughan then got in the way of a hard Purcell shot, and in a rare breakaway Hepburn headed wide from a well directed Max Kent free kick. Luke won a corner with a rapid run along the left, May sent the ball over and Smith’s header was turned out for another corner. Smith was booked for a mistimed tackle and Billy Radley’s free kick was partially cleared by the wall, but Mott reacted well to made an excellent save from Tony Jacobs who was first to the rebound. A Purcell shot was turned out for a corner, which May sent over to Smith who headed back to Purcell, whose follow up shot was wide. Adam Seal made a good save from Junior Luke who had cut in from the left wing, but Hornchurch were almost caught out when a breakaway gave Nash a scoring chance, and Mott made another fine save to keep the ball out of the net. A Joey May shot was blocked by the packed defence and in stoppage time a shot from Tobi Joseph hit the bar and went over.
