HORNCHURCH  1  THAMESMEAD  1

On a day when temperatures soared into the low 30s, the match was punctuated by numerous stoppages and bookings, which broke up the flow of play.

Hornchurch started confidently, but after five minutes were reduced to ten when Billy Coyne needed lengthy treatment after a tackle involving Michal Spencer.

Coyne returned five minutes later, and Junior Luke made two good runs along the right, whilst David Knight sent Calvin Poku away on the left, the move ending with a good stop by Andy Walker.

Hornchurch took the lead when a Junior Luke corner was handled, and David Knight hit the penalty firmly into the net.

Ten minutes later Thamesmead gained a surprise equaliser after a Spencer shot had been cleared for a throw. The ball was thrown to Jay Porter, whose harmless cross was going wide until it took a deflection via Elliot Styles and into the net.

Play evened out for a time – Luke made another good run on the right, and at the other end Sam Mott fielded a corner.

Dave Collis became the first victim in a match which rapidly turned into a card-fest when he was penalised for what seemed to be a perfectly legitimate tackle.

A Luke run ended in another corner and Joey May sent the ball across to Tobi Joseph, who headed narrowly wide of the goal. Thamesmead were fortunate to escape when keeper Walker picked up a back pass, but play was allowed to continue.

Walker saved from Jed Chouman, and, in stoppage time, ex-Romford player Jack Barry was booked, whilst in the final minute of the half David Knight ran through to score, but the goal was disallowed for offside.

Mott was in action early in the second half, saving from Spencer, with the rebound being hit into the side netting, and Tobi Joseph put in a hard drive which was blocked and eventually scrambled to safety.

Knight became the next yellow card victim, and it was Knight who could have put Hornchurch ahead after an excellent cross-field pass from Purcell gave him a clear run at goal, but he put his shot wide as keeper Walker came out to narrow the angle.

Tyrus Gordon-Young was booked and soon after the visitors were reduced to ten when Jack Barry was shown a straight red for a wayward elbow.

Purcell was booked, along with Marc Gorbell, who had been on the field for less than two minutes, and Tom Pennells was the next to be shown a yellow card.

Abs Thompson set up a scoring chance with an excellent run on the right, and Luke headed his centre down to Purcell, whose shot was a fraction too high and over the bar.

Walker saved from Styles and shortly afterwards the ball was cleared off the line as Hornchurch piled on the pressure, with some claiming that the ball had not only crossed the line but was also scooped back out by a Thamesmead hand which did not belong the their keeper.

Knight again went close, but Thamesmead held out under constant pressure to take a point.
