Offside rule 2015/16

Cannot see much different to last season.

If a player is offside when the ball is played forward but is inactive and then becomes active because he chases the ball or challenges a player with the ball he then becomes active and is flagged for offside.

Wasn't that always the rule?

Personally, I think this will cause even more off and on the pitch arguments.

It's not clear-cut and I can see referees and their assistants disagreeing over decisions.

I'd still go back to the old rule of there having to be at least one defender goal-side of the passed ball, ANYWHERE on the pitch.  This interferring with play rule is far too open for disagreement.

This might make it clearer.

Also Big J R, technically you need 2 defending players goal side. (goal keeper can count as one)

just being pedantic :D

Sorry  -  I should have pointed that out.

I keep forgetting that in lower divisions of non-league, the keeper often pops off for a swift pint at the bar !!

I think that rule was in place last season but Refs/linos just didn't apply it.

A ball gets played through to a player who is technically offside but is nowhere near the ball. If he then makes an attempt to get the ball he would have been flagged offside as now he is being deemed to have become active.

For some reason last season, as illustrated in the video, an offside player in the area makes a movement for the ball in front of the keeper it very often wasn't given as offside when really it probably should have been.

I think what they are trying to do is get rid of some of the confusion around when is a player deemed active or inactive.

It's definitely a change on the law for this year, specifically on the other player in a goal scoring chance.

Last year he wouldn't of been offside, this season he will be.

He is now officially affecting the play

As a few have said, supposed to take the confusion away, but could make it a lot worse.

Talk Sport have been talking about it for most of the day

It's not a change to the rules, it's guidance on the interpretation of an element of the offside law which is aimed at clarifying whether or not an attacking player is active or inactive and if he's interfering with an opponent. I'll try tomorrow to post the guidance we received from the FA which includes examples showing various instances of the interpretation showing offside and not offside.

The offside law is clear and this guidance is aimed to provide clarification to an area in which there was previously the potential for inconsistency in application. It'll make more sense when I post the text that supports the examples.

And here's a link to the information which is available on the Isthmian League website, http://www.isthmian.co.uk/match-officials-given-new-guidance-on-offside-law-25302

Unfortunately, the link to the "Sepp Blatter will explain everything about the football rules to you for for 50 Euro's" seems to have been taken down.
