Friendly v Wealdstone

Recommended Posts

I think most would put family, work, football in that order of priorities (note not preference!) so of course family time in the summer will get in the way of a 'hobby' it's always been this way so one should be surprised about it, yes of course it's not ideal but we are blessed with many options at centre back so 2 games isn't a major issue.

The managers seem fine with it, which is all that matters.

If only we could turn the clock back, when men were men and women knew their place ! lol !

Me thinks?.... ' I'm going to get it now, with both barrels' ! ha ha ha !

It's really a case of us having to be fine with it, there is no other option!

The number of teams with similar issues is huge at the minute at our level and higher. Bakes referred to Gordon at Wealdstone and I have also read an interview today with Dean Brennan at Hemel, another Conf South side with 7 or 8 players out at the moment, mostly with injuries, but also they are missing Matty Spring this weekend for the first league game due to family commitments who is an ex pro. So we all have to put up with it.

To be honest we are really pleased with the condition of the squad as we go in to the opening game. We have a few challenges and a few knocks but we are hopeful that none of these will be an issue come Saturday and we will have some tough decisions to make on the starting 11 and also the squad of 16.

Jon,you must have been well pleased with last night's efforts after Saturday's poor offering. Think we were all boosted by it.

Just one thing, where was Chris Henry last night?

Last night was the only pre season friendly I have seen, and I was very impressed with a lot of the new players..... it will probably take me a few matches to put names to the faces, but the goalkeeper looked excellent, the lad that played right midfield in the first half was classy, (he seemed to always find space, looked composed with the ball and kept possession well).

I also thought the trial lad that played left back and left midfield showed a lot of potential, but maybe tried doing too much to impress (I do hope we see him again).

I've read a lot on these forums over the last week or two about Lewis Putnam, I probably didn't see the best of him last night as we did a lot of defending in the second half..... but he did work hard and held possession reasonably well.

I'm looking forward to Saturday!

I really hope little Chris hasn't left!! Also putmen aka Bambi was very good against burnham, he certainly knows where the goal is. If Ed stays unbroken they will be great together but I do also think Scott Harris could take one of their places if he continues playing how he has been

Baffled by that to be honest. I have seen precisely none of pre-season so can only go on the last few weeks of last season but thought he was our stand out performer. He gave defenders nightmares and I was genuinely excited about the prospect of Chris on one wing and a fit again Wazza on the other. Real shame.

Personally I can see why we've let Chris Henry go.

For me he's one of those 'luxury players', exciting on the ball but when he didn't have the ball it was a bit like playing with 10 men.

For me, at this standard of football, you can afford to have flair players but when they don't have the ball they have to do their fair share of the donkey work.

Look at Jake Parsons for example, probably the player with the most flair in our team but off the ball or when he loses the ball he puts his head down and grafts to get the ball back.

I don't think Chris Henry was that type of player and as such IMO not the type of player that suited the way our managers want to play.

Interesting decision this one and time will tell if it's the right or wrong one. Like Reading Rebel has said " you need players to do their fair share of the donkey work" and at times it must have been bloody hard for the LB behind him as he never tracked back and literally couldn't tackle! However, I would say that he was one of the most exciting players to have pulled on a Slough shirt in recent years and when running at defenders he had them scared stiff. A real shame it wasn't meant to be and I wish Chris all the best for the future.

I think John Boy and Reading Rebel have put across why the managers have gone down this route.

In my view it is an ill-timed mistake, as Chris proved last season that he was an asset in the attacking sense and had the ability to unlock defences.Three goals in eight games is testament to that, without mentioning his assists but perhaps Bakes and Unders have also been swayed that if they can get the recruitment of Adam Ntita on board, things might work out for the best. We will have to wait on that score.

I thought we should have kept Chris for at least 2-3 months into this league season, to see what impact he has, then reviewed the situation.

However, the managers have to make the calls they feel are right, to fit with how they want their team to play but in this instance I think they've dropped a clanger and from this spectator's point of view Slough are less exciting to watch than we were going to be[a few hours ago],when Chris was staying !

Surprised and very disappointed at the Chris Henry news...............I know the managers dont have to give us fans reasons for odd decisions like this but this will have upset many when we were all including him among the players that would make a real difference this season.
