H&Y PSF

C'est la vie

Recommended Posts

A fantastic performance from the lads tonight, we more than matched a very well organised H & Y side from a league above us.

H&Y dominated some what the first 20 mins or so but that was to be expected as our team adapted to the surface, but from then on it was hard to tell which of the two teams was from the conference south.

Our well organised defence kept out the opposition and only gave them one or two half chances. Nathan Webb was excellent playing in the defensive mid role and showed a dominant physical presence in protecting the defence.

When Chris Henry came on just before half time he terrorised the opposition full backs and convincingly showed that he should be starting most matches. He was not put off by much bigger defenders and turned them inside out with his pace and trickery.

We will need to improve our finishing but if we play like that we will be absolutely fine this season and will surprise quite a few teams with big budgets.

Bakes and Unders will have a very tough decision if they have to cut down on numbers and an even tougher one on deciding a starting eleven if the team keeps playing like tonight.

My MOTM would have to be N Webb with Henry a close second.

I was also very pleased with how we played last night. Looked very solid all over the pitch, just a little bit lacking on finishing when the chances did come. Thought the defence in particular looked good all night and I only really remember our keeper having to make a couple of saves. Wasn't much to choose between either team but we did edge it on chances. My first look at the squad for this season and I think on that display it looks promising.

A few observations from me on the game last night:

Scott looked generally solid in goal again. Didn’t have a great deal to do though. His kicks can sometimes go too long and there were a couple of wobbles but he recovered well.

Having MacDonald makes a huge difference – his experience clearly shows. He is a good organiser and communicator, which we were lacking last year.

Jake Parsons was again industrious and one of the best players on the park. Good to see Ryan Parsons back too, and Callum Webb did well at right-back – Sean Fraser may have difficulty getting back in!

Would tend to agree with SRJ that Nathan Webb was our best player in midfield. I thought he lost the ball to easily a few times early on, but grew into the game and tackled well.

There was a real determination from everyone to win the game and keep a clean sheet – it didn’t feel like a pre-season friendly. Hayes & Yeading are a good side and it was a close game, but we kept it tight and didn't offer them much.

We didn't really create many chances either, but more than Hayes did. Read was put clean through in the second half but put his chance wide. Scott Harris battled well and linked well with Putman, who created the goal with a pull-back. Chris Henry made a difference when he came on, showing good trickery to win a few free-kicks and get in some dangerous balls.

I thought the 3G surface played well, even in the drizzling rain, and there was no real difference to me in terms of the run of the ball, bounce etc. I'm a fan of playing games on real grass surfaces, but can see the benefit of 3G, which is a good job as we will (hopefully) have to get used to it soon!

Great to have competition in most places.

As far as I'm aware Callum Webb hasn't signed yet.

The 3G pitch was horrible to walk on with trainers, it was ok walking away from the entrance (with the knap), but felt really spongy and long when walking back to the entrance.

Thankfully these pitches have come a very long way since this was put down.

Saying all that, I think they played really well and controlled the ball excellently.

It was also quite funny to hear their bench shouting at the ref complaining that we were tackling too hard for a friendly, then congratulating their own player for doing exactly the same thing.

Another good pre-season outing with a few players still to come back

With John Porter away we are unable to give our usual after match thoughts, however these should resume after this weekend.

What I will say is that was a very competitive friendly, with tackles flying in from both teams, and exactly the type of test you want pre season, especially against a good side.

We were delighted with our performance, and whilst early days is exactly where we wanted to be, the fitness levels were great, and it is very hard to pick people out as everyone contributed last night.

Great to see Jamie McClurg get through another 70 minutes, and him and Naths work in the middle against 3 was outstanding.

I think we restricted H&Y to a couple of long shots, and don't think they really cut us open at all, and I felt that throughout the game we had the better chances.

With Billy Jeffreys, Craig Scott, Sean Fraser, Adam Foulser, Warren Harris, Adam Martin, Adrian Sear, Ben Edwards and Luke Williams all missing it shows how tough it is going to be for the players to make sure they are in the starting 11 for the first game of the season, and that we will have huge competition for places.

A positive day and night as a Rebel!!

Triallist was a young midfielder called Eamon Orfally who came out of the John Madjeski academy and was recommended to us this week.

With numerous lads away this week we decided to give him an opportunity for 20 mins or so and thought he showed some promise. We've invited him down to train tomorrow so we can take another look.

Another good friendly with us just the better side thus deserving the win.

Overall two good performances in the games so far with a great deal of promise shown...............with those we have seen and the returnees that we didnt see yet , I dont envy the bosses in reducing the squad as fits the budget, let alone picking a first eleven for the initial league game.

Maybe it can be seen as a nice dilemma but...............................

I will miss the game on Saturday but will watch this space with a great interest in the evening......................may the momentum continue especially against Burnham next week !
