3spirit
I noticed on Twitter there has been some debate about how teams are coming back far earlier to train than is usual. As much as this fan misses his football fix,I think the players should have the maximum amount of time off to rejuvenate and feel fresh and keen and raring to go,when they do come back. For me,non-league football has grown in it's professionalism, which in the main has been a good thing but I think too often our grass roots game is trying too hard to mirror it's illustrious top of the game partners, which in turn brings all the negatives to the amateur heart and soul,as well as the good things. . We all get carried away with success, when sometimes it's the fun of the ride whether it's going up or down or being in the middle.
Neil Baker
We refused to bring them in until July, as that is when we have always started, and this still gives us a full 5 weeks (the season is only starting one day earlier this year), most lads tend to keep themselves in good shape these days (so they have their beach bodies for their holidays). I know some teams have started already, however having an intense 6 or 7 weeks when lads are not getting paid can possibly lead to them getting bored, frustrated and also picking up injuries etc. Yes we will still have players who will miss chunks of pre season and even the start of the season, but that is a little bit pass and parcel with what you have to put up with when people are not on contracts and life in general these days. None of these lads get paid enough for myself and Jon to tell them they can not go away with their families because they are picking up expenses for Slough Town. We have teachers in our side, players whose partners are teachers, and also Dads with kids in school, therefore the only time they can usually go away is July/August. Something we have to deal with, and something we will I am sure. You also have the issue of weddings which often come up on a weekend at this stage of the year... It is called the juggling act of being a manager (more so at this stage of the year), and believe me it is never straight forward.
