An interesting development.

Hertford Town boss Paul Halsey has reacted with surprise that Tommy Wade – his top scorer and captain last season – has joined Spartan League Premier Division rivals Hoddesdon Town.

Wade, who won the Golden Boot award at Hertford Town's end of season presentations just a few weeks ago, tweeted on Tuesday: "Looking forward to the new season with @HoddesdonTownFC and @gavin_kelsey".

The striker netted a hat-trick for Hertford when the Hertingfordbury Park side routed Hoddesdon 6-1 last season.

Halsey said: "I spoke to him about four weeks ago and he told me he wasn't going to be playing, and next thing I know he's signed for Hoddesdon.

"He wants to try his hand with them and that's fair enough – I wish him all the best.

"No one is bigger than the club. I'll be looking to bring in another striker.

"We've still got Leigh [Rose] and he's capable of scoring a lot of goals."

The Blues boss added that he has retained the bulk of the side from last campaign, which saw them finish 11th in table and win the Herts Charity Shield.

"We've kept everyone from last season apart from Tommy and George Laffar, who is going to Enfield Town," said Halsey.

"I wish George all the best – he has a bright future ahead of him.

"I'm looking to strengthen the squad with four or five new players.

"We've kept Jack Friend [who made six appearances towards the end of the campaign]. He's what you want in a team, he's a leader. And we've got [keeper] Harry [Ricketts] – we'll build the side around them.

"We will start afresh. We will not push things, we will take it week by week and progress."

Hertford Town have lined up friendlies against Hadley Wood and Wingate on July 11, at home to Harlow on July 21 and then host Hanwell Town on July 25.

"I'm looking forward to those gamesicon1.png – they are all against good teams," added Halsey.

I'm sure it will be nought but a heros welcome after all he has done for Hertford. Couldn't have given more to them and deserves their respect.

Doubtful. I have a feeling they might see it like this- he lied about not playing anymore, then joined another team.

That would be a shame. Shouldn't chastise players for trying to better themselves.

Leaving a club that finished 11th last season to join a club that finished 19th last season is bettering oneself

Left? Was he under contract? If not he has left anywhere, season was over and he isn't/wasn't attached to anyone and in Hertfordshire managers own words he wasn't going to be playing for them as he wasn't going to be playing. If he was planning not to play then was talked out of it by Hoddesdon manager that's up to him.
