From Eversley to Wembley

Recommended Posts

On the 7th August 2010 a young 17 year Ben Gladwin made his debut for Eversley at Chobham Rec. Next week Ben will be playing at Wembley for Swindon Town in their play off final against Preston.

Some story after being released from Reading's Academy at 16............. just shows what desire, hard work and the right attitude can achieve.

Keep an eye out for him next week. I'm sure everyone in the CCL will wish him well and continued success in the future.

Wow...Ben has just signed for QPR for 1.5 mil.

Begs the question ....what does it take to go from CCL to the top of the game and are professional clubs missing out?

Anyone who knows anything about football understands that knowledge of the way the game is set up at a professional level is imperative and this is now really only gleaned from the clubs academy system but I'm sure we must have some potential hidden gems in the CCL?

Interesting topic!

I read that Reading released him when he was 14 for being too small.  He is 6'3" now!

Shows the Reading medical team didn't have a clue !

Do Pro clubs ever look at the parents of these youngsters to get a clue what they may look like in the future.

My dad told me,when you go out with a girl, look at the Mum,because thats what your get in later years.SO TRUE in my case anyway.

Yes they do Smudge.  Especially for goalkeepers.  First people they look for are the parents.

Only played 3/4 games for Eversley as part of our link with the JMA at the time. Also played for Wokingham but no mention of that as well. He has certainly worked hard in the gym as he has moved up the leagues. Well done and good luck to him.

Was this lad a regular at Eversley or was he just helping out for a game or two ? If he was a regular why the feck did they not get him on a contract so as the club could make some well needed cash.

Who the hell signs a contract at CCL Prem level???? And for how much money??

£40.00 a week???

You'd be crazy to tie yourself to a club at CCL level for nothing less than £200 a week.

Sometimes it's about the club.

No ccl team should pay £200 for a player.

I know of at least two examples myself of a contract being signed at CCL Premier level within the last few years. Not a smart move in almost every case, and after making representations to the club concerned along the lines of: "the player could/would still leave anyway as he would probably get similar elsewhere, so the only thing the club gets from a contract is a guaranteed wage cost even if they are injured" and they haven't done it since!

It wouldn't surprise me if it still happens though, especially with a 17-18 year old who may attract a sell on clause in the future which would be the only reason to ever do this nowadays in my opinion.

A few years ago we had Matt Elliott on contract and received (eventually) a small fee from Charlton Athletic for whom he originally signed, before going to Torquay, Scunthorpe, Oxford, Leicester and Scotland. That was back in the late eighties though. Pity we didn't have a sell on clause too!

I wonder if they look at the parents height in Spain and Italy? Or whether it doesn't enter their heads as being relevant?

For Goalkeepers quite possibly.

I have a small amount of knowledge and I know one club who are not bothered about any player except a potential goalkeeper in terms of height.

Maybe a contact that doesnt involve a wage however could include a small amount of money and maybe a split in any fee received.
