METROPOLITAN POLICE  2  HORNCHURCH  1

When what appeared to be a clear-cut hand ball offence late in the first half was ignored, and when a defensive error late in the second half led to the winning goal, this just about summed up the season for Hornchurch.

In bright sunshine and on an immaculate playing surface the Police began well – Sam Mott made a good save from Joe Turner following a defensive error, and two minutes later it was Mott again saving from Turner. Mott made it three excellent saves in as many minutes when he turned a hard shot from Nikki Ahamed around the post for the first corner of the match.

Hornchurch got into their rhythm when Reece Beckles-Richards played a long pass to George Purcell, who moved along the wing and crossed to Martin Tuohy, whose first time volley skimmed the bar.

On 14 minutes a Tobi Joseph run led to a corner, and Joey May swung the ball over but too close to home keeper Stuart Earle who made a comfortable catch.

As Hornchurch began to take control Frankie Curley combined with Purcell, whose centre found Joseph, who went close with a well-directed header.

Beckles-Richards then played the ball through to Purcell who ran on, and, despite appearing to be pulled back by his marker, he was able to prod he ball past Searle but wide of the post.

A Reece-Beckles run ended in a corner, and shortly before the interval Hornchurch were denied a penalty when a defender handled a hard Purcell shot, a play-on decision that even had the referee’s assessor looking bemused.

Close to half time Mott made a good save from a Bradley Hudson-Odoi free kick.

Junior Luke replaced Courtney Homans at half time and made a good run down the right wing, only for this cross to roll across the goal without anyone able to get a touch.

Hornchurch took the lead when Purcell made ground on the wing, and crossed into the middle where Joseph touched back to Joey May who promptly fired the ball hard into the net.

Thomas Gogo came on for Martin Tuohy, and the home side pressed forward as Hornchurch took up a more defensive role. Joey May conceded a free kick and Hudson-Odoi sent the ball over to the far post where Rob Bartley headed over.

The Police began to press forward and shots by Simon Mur and Joe Turner went sailing over the bar and out of the ground, and a Nikki Ahamed volley was well saved by Sam Mott. As the Police continued to come forward Billy Coyne tackled Hudson-Odoi to turn the ball out for a corner, which was eventually scrambled away.

Hornchurch came back strongly, with a Purcell free kick which cannoned back off the wall of defenders, and a solo run by Purcell, which ended with a fine save by Searle.

Kieran Bishop replaced Beckles-Richards, and a minute later Joe turner levelled for the Police with a shot from the edge of the area.

Hornchurch almost regained the lead with a good run and shot by Tobi Joseph, but with two minutes remaining a ball was played deep into the area, Sam Mott came out to punch clear, but could only knock the ball down, and Rob Bartley was first to react, and put the ball past a crowd of defenders and into the net.

Hornchurch could not pull the goal back in the five minutes of stoppage time which followed, and when the home officials said ‘you are far too good to go down’, how many times have we heard this at an away match this season?
